Rear-end shunts at roundabouts happens to cars all the time. It's simply due to crap drivers looking right while creeping forward at the same time, assuming the vehicle in front is doing the same. As a driver, one should avoid looking right for a gap until the car in front has gone

My thoughts too. He was cycling closer to the curb than I would have but I'm not sure if his positioning contributed to the collision.

Shocking. Both the driving and the police inaction.

It's terrible I know, but all these videos of accidents where the police refused to do anything have made my mind up that if I ever get knocked off my bike by a careless driver I will stay on the ground, wait for an ambulance and claim whiplash to make sure the police take it seriously.

Can't complain too much about the cycling, yes he's in the gutter a bit on the approach but he is checking over his shoulder, he positions himself a bit more centrally at the mouth of the roundabout and it is a good 3 seconds while he is stationary before he is hit. As said above, driver probably just looking right at traffic on roundabout instead of what is ahead.

That fella is me  I've learnt a lot since this incident (it was around 6 months ago) and am definitely more confident in my road positioning and style.

MrGrumpy commutes over this RAB and will attest to it's poor layout.

@Crankarm can't all afford two cameras mate, and i'd only recently bought that one! but when i buy a new camera i'll use that as a rear. I can't help my response given that i was in considerable pain and shock when i spoke to the driver. We can't all predict how we'd react to a situation and i don't think you can say how you would react in this situation until you are in it!

It's a tricky one, the approach to this RAB is quite a hill so i used to be tentative about taking primary (not any more) and whilst this road does curve to the left slightly, as others on YouTube have mentioned it is by no means poor visibility!

May I forstly say glad you werent hurt and soudn OK! How was the bike in the end?

And someone above said she wasn't insured? Did you puruse it? Is that correct etc? And more background?

And (sorry about the 'ands') what about the Police? Did they simply say 'minor RTA, no need to take further'? Much like they would at a normal RAB shunt at relatively low speed or is there more to it than that? How was their attitude etc?

Hope you don't mind the questions????

Dave just wanted to say i've been there and I acted exactly like you mate, glad you got something out of it, I didn't get the plate and the guy drove off after a bit.

Thinking about a rear camera myself as well now.

Well the bike needed a new derailed and wheel set, and mudguards, helmet. Around £300 of damages. The bike was fine after repairs but I sold it once I graduated and bought myself a proper bike :-)

The insurance payed out once a little digging was done (the whole process took around 6 months). I used a cycling specific claims company to handle things, and for them it must have been pretty open and shut case considering the video footage and nature of the incident.

Nothing further with the police. Two phone calls and a visit to the station was enough to convince me that they aren't going to take me seriously, which is a shame being my first interaction with them. They simply said as I'm not seriously hurt they don't need to take further action.

Stay safe!

Thanks for answers - glad that she was insured (SOmeone seems to think she wasnt above) and that you were not out of pocket!

I can see both sides re the Police to be honest; if it were car on car, they would not get involved unless someone was seriously hurt. WHilst we are all alot more vulnerable on bikes, what about a Motorbike? Would that mean it is Police warranted or not? etc

All in all, you showed admirable calm and incredibly good spirits considering you had just been taken from behind

I live in Bradley Fold and use that roundabout coming from the other side going towards Stone Clough. How long ago was the incident because they changed all the white lines and priorities of the lanes a while back (not that that would make any difference to someone rear ending you)

So the Police say that because there were no significant injuries, they could not prosecute? Rubbish. By that logic if I was pissed and ploughed my car into a group of people but none were injured, they could not prosecute. I think lots of incidents are not followed up because they are not "worth" writing up or pursuing. This is typical of the attitudes towards cyclists - just because we broke no bones then everything is OK. However, if someone in a car is shunted but unhurt then a report is filed because if not the Insurance companies would ask the police why not.

shudder...

I hated that bit on my commute, it's a drag up a hill and on the way home about two thirds done, so tired... busy roundabout with traffic nipping onto the bottom of the m61...
in fact I sometimes ignored it and went into the ped tunnel..

can't believe the police have decided there's nothing doing here?

Glad both cyclist and driver are okay.

The driver clearly benefited from those two airbags - how do you go about getting a paid of those? ;)
