Lycra alternative?

I am also on the heavier side, especially as I am 7 days into a USA road trip / beer and food fest!!! 
. I always cycle in Lycra, shorts, Knicks or tights depending on the temp. Just go for it, only black though! Much more comfortable especially with good padding. Pearl Izumi, gore and altura better for larger sizes, 16+
Just make sure they're not too tight around the waist as can be uncomfortable!

If you do feel a bit self conscious wear the tight shorts but a baggier top to cover you up a bit. One year from now you will probably be in a skin suit!
Edit......just to mention when I started cycling not that long ago two young blades shouted at me from a car as it went past "go on space hopper give it some" as I puffed and blew up a slight incline, that seemed at the time like a mountain side. It actually spurred me on to lose a bit of timber and get fitter.

Actually, I've seen bigger people than me out riding (though admittedly not in lycra) and my first thought was 'good on them'.
I find the lycra incredibly comfortable, so I'll be wearing it!!

@ScotiaLass I wear short(er) flouncy skirts or above the knee shorts over my padded lycra ones.
Mostly though I just cycle in normal leggings or trousers and "cover the bum" long tops.
Ultimately, you need to feel comfortable, not self conscious, wear what makes you feel good.

Don't worry about it. Anybody else on a bike won't care what you look like, and the non-riders think we are all totally bonkers anyway.

As you can see in my profile pic I'm very much on the large side and in full Lycra! I was very self conscious to start with but I've put comfort over style it's much cooler to cycle in. I have even walked round tesco in it! I just don't care any more!

I've just got back from the supermarket, dressed as per my avetar
...sure I get looks and a few comments but I just smile because I know I'm a cyclist and they haven't got a clue who I am or what I have done on a bicycle.

I have lycra and no, you can't have pics (yet!). I prefer shorts to long tights but as it's coming into winter.....I bought both!

I seen a nice pair of Muddy Fox MTB shorts...they looked really comfy!! All padded, but long and loose and waterproof!
