I've got a pair of shimano M520 clipless SPD Pedals. I'm wondering whether they are compatible with road shoes or not.

Yes they must be SPD compatible shoes. I used these on my road bike as they feel comfortable.

You need a pair of shoes with two pin (spd) cleat connection as on the right here

The ones in the middle are 3 pin spd-sl and wont work.

You can however get some road shoes which cater for both systems.

depending on the shoe you choose, it may be worth trying to find some spd road cleats on ebay as the little metal cleats would be murder to walk in (most road shoes assume you will be using a much bigger cleat). Alternatively, use mtb shoes as these recess the cleat to allow the sole to grip.

The small SPD cleats are wobbly to walk on with road shoes but you can get mountain bike shoes where they are recessed into the sole to allow walking.(Lidls dop them now and then for less than £20)

I use MTB shoes usually but also I use DHB road shoes with my 530 pedals. You can just about carefully wobble into a pub /shop but if you need to walk any distance there hopeless.

On the plus side the cleats are hard wearing and cheap to replace.

I use my dhb R1's with m520's. I agree they are difficult to walk in so I go round to the garage in my crocs, change there and stick crocs into bag if I'm going to be getting off the bike anywhere :becool: .

Good idea that. I was thinking of making up two foam rubber tubes to slide over the shoes so i can put them on in the house. I allready scratched the wooden flooring once but succesfully blamed the kids dirty trainers

Might have to try those .... A quick google led me to Rose at only €15.00.... but only when I've worn out my Lidl MTB shoes (no sign of that happening anytime soon)

Dont think I would want to spend £22 on them but its got me wondering about bonding two rubber blocks directly to the sole of the shoe one each side of the cleat.possibly brake blocks would do.Worst they could do is fall off. Need to be positioned with care so as not to make it harder to clip in.

My Lidl MTB shoes are doing well also. Only complaint is they are heavy which is why on long rides I opt for the dhb road shoes.

I use Shimano RO76 shoes which will take either SPD or SPL-SL cleats.

I did walk a fair bit in the original cleats and it was a bit awkward and the bottoms of the shoes got a bit scratched.

Now I have the SH71 cleats and walking is much easier, but as I do walk in said shoes quite a bit, the rubbery bits are now getting a bit worn out.

I do need to find some mountain bike type shoes which will make walking longer distances more possible.

A lot of manufacturers will offer the same shoe in road or off road with a different model number.

The shoes will be identical apart from the drilling and the rubber on the bottom.

Just get the off road version, they will peform pretty much the same.

Same shoe body just a different sole, don't get hung up on the weird road/off road thing, there is very little difference.
