MacBook batteries - why can't you change them?

I'm not sure why 'form over function' seems to be mentioned repeatedly in this thread... my macbook is easier to use and performs everything I do on it better than any crappy pc I've ever used. It's obviously a taste thing and people like to shout about which is best in both camps. If you don't like pc's/mac's, who cares?!

lighter, .37kg is no issue for me. Battery life, 10 hours is more than enough for average use. Cost, already said it's not an issue at these prices, unless Apple suddenly decide to double their prices! I'm verry happy being an Apple whore with my Macbook and iPhone

lighter, .37kg is no issue for me. Battery life, 10 hours is more than enough for average use.

but it does put to the sword that an external battery leads to lower capacity and more weight.

Battery-life claims are always nonsense, as they assume pretty low CPU usage, minimal hard-drive usage and the screen set too dim to read in any halfway realistic light. As I do a lot of photo stuff, the screen brightness in particular is quite critical, and needs to be set to about 75% to give a realistic image (100% is way too bright on most laptops).

I initially bought a Dell, which had a claimed battery life of 9.5 hours and an actual one of 3.5 hours. I replaced it (after three wifi card failures, a motherboard failure and a hard drive failure) with a MacBook Pro 17 (very nearly identical spec), which has a claimed battery-life of 8 hours and a real-life one of just over 5 hours.

1 - Throw MacBook into the bin.
2 - Buy a normal laptop.
3 - And wait for the blue screen of death.

Apple will replace the battery on out of warranty units for about the same price it used to cost for one of the replaceable batteries.

If you set up the energy management correctly you can often as not see the full 8 hours, I have a 15" Macbook Pro running 8gb ram and see 8hrs use most of the time.
