Flying to Madrid in April for wedding anniversary, (no cycling).

what to eat, what to see, what to avoid and where to stay and how to get about ?

Don't expect much English to be spoken outside the hotel or main tourist attractions. Learn some basic Spanish before you go

And buy a guidebook for things to see

Capital city, don't expect it to be especially cheap

Try the various tapas bars in the nightlife area south of Plaza del Sol. This place - la Oreja de Oro, or Golden Ear, serves fried pigs' ears as its speciality. After a few small copas they really taste quite good.

Retiro Park is nice place to walk, the station adjacent (Atcoha) is also worth having a look in for it's botanical gardens, lots of art gallerias nearby if that is your thing. The Bernabeu tour is great and if a game is on at Rayo (Vallecas) it is worth seeing for their crackpot fans, easily got to on the metro.

There are too many great bars and eateries to mention, you will find them, don't give up on the nightlife which really does go on till dawn and might not get started in some areas till after midnight.

You don't have to worry in Madrid - English is widely spoken, although the locals will appreciate it if you try to speak Spanish.

Wasn't when I went a few years ago certainly not by cabbies
