I recall a time when I and two friends were driving from a concert in Ampthill through Hemel. The driver was - among other things - a driving instructor, and the other passenger was at the time having driving lessons (not from friend 1). We got over the magic roundabout with no hassle, but the learner couldn't quite understand how it was possible to go round it anti-clockwise.

So the instructor turned round at the next opportunity and did a complete circuit, anti-clockwise, just to prove it could be done, with the learner getting progressively more freaked out...

We have this one in Basingstoke (amongst many more)

Some blurb on the council website where I just found this pic says -

"The work is designed to provide varied and intriguing views for those travelling around the roundabout."

I think I would prefer those travelling around the roundabout to be looking where they are going. I do like this it is by Ray Smith.

The Hemel one is easier to understand as a species of little ring road with mini roundabout access rather than as a roundabout as such. The other one, though, is simply a muddled response to congestion.

If you think about it logically and dispassionately, the Magic Roundabouts at Hemel and Swindon are just a series of mini roundabouts in a circle. Treat each one in isolation, and you'll have no problem.

The one in Swindon is nightmare.... I had to work in Swindon for a few months a few years ago I used to dread going over it ..... on a plus they had THE best Curry house bar non none I had ever been in (can't remember its name though......) trouble is my expenses fell short of my bill whenever I used it.... (sorry I went a bit off topic) never went round the roundabout on a bike:eek: and don't fancy going back and trying it either
The Swindon magic roundabout is a piece of p1ss, I ride across it every day.
Apparently it is safer than a normal roundabout, it certainly feels safer than some of the four lane 40mph roundabouts I have to negotiate.

Looking at the OP photo again and the other photo from a different angle one can see the chalk outlines, the are clearly arrows pointing which way the arrows are supposed to go.
