Magicshine lights dx

Just pressed the "Buy button" on the newer MS-808E with the Cree XM-L LED. DX sent me a $5 voucher, added in £33 sat on my paypal account from my Wiggle refund, end cost was £10. £42 total cost ain't bad.

Was looking at the copies for $45, but the connectors are 2.5mm, not 2.1mm as on the MS lights, and I've got 2 spare batteries. The cheaper lights don't have the battery indicator button.

Anyway, I'll chuck this on the MTB.

Blimey, lucky you said that as I didn't notice.

If I get another anyway it will be the 872 or similar probably though.

The 872 was out of my price range - i.e. didn't want to spend much over what was burning a hole in my paypal account.

Will seriously consider one (872) in the future though.

You can get adapters from Maplin for less than £2 to convert the 2.5mm to 2.1mm

I have the MJ-816 and have got only praise for it. The battery life is excellent for such a powerful light. I ride on pitch black roads at night and feel 100% safe with the illumination that the light gives off. I would only need the 2 smaller lights to see but I use all 3 as it gives me the spot light and the wide angle as well.

I have just seen that they do the rear light too so will that will definitely be purchased. This is the best light I have had and I have had a few.

The only negative thing about them is those stupid o rings. The control button o ring is fine because it is a small unit but the light itself (which I have hanging under my handlebars) is a bit more wobbly. Having the light under the handlebars prevents a lot of wobble and I have also used a bit of rubber for the O Ring to grip on to!

I need to find a bracket that fits perfectly on to this light and is totally wobble free.

Order one of these. http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=6091

Remove the screw holding the MS light unit onto the O ring mount, and remove the similar screw from the new mount. It will now screw onto the light unit direct, but you need to flip the spacer so that the screw is now the right length.

If you have 25.4mm bars you will need some rubber insert/packing to hold the mount secure to the bar, but mine holds firm on rocky descents and even cobbles and setts.

You need the one in the pic for the 300,305,310 etc - the one with the large thumb screw and pivoting clamp. Doesn't look in stock with Chain Reaction.

PS the rear lights are excellent (I've got two), and if you don't need the battery, but just a splitter, then they work out at about £25 from UK sellers/ebay.

oh, that one's discontinued and I can't get it from any electron dealer either. Looks like I'm out of luck then. I've got the battery so I'm now off to ebay to see what's on offer.

cheers

My worry with the Magicshine lamps is they have no beam cut off and will dazzle people coming the other way whichever way they are pointed.

So are most powerful bike lights. You angle them down and reduce the power where there is traffic.

At long last magiclightuk has come up with a cracking fit for purpose bracket. I now have a solid MJ-816 light on my bike. Not the cheapest at £15 but it's worth it IMO.

is it just me or does that look like it could be made using a rear reflector clip and a suitable bolt ?

cost zero if you have old bits lying .

Sadly I didn't have the old bits lying around and I have tried numerous cheap brackets that are crap.

Q/R would be a big benefit for some but I don't need it. I agree that £15 is a lot of money but I don't regret it and as I said I'm fed up buying cheap crap brackets that don't work despite links on other forums saying they do.
