There's a setting in my bios which resets everything to default if I get so many bad boots in a row. Caught me out a few times when I had faulty USB devices attached or a malfunctioning drive.
I kept going back in to reset everything until I finally combed through the bios in detail and figured out which switch was causing it to happen. Just check that before you assume a virus.
