Good job, well figured.

There's a setting in my bios which resets everything to default if I get so many bad boots in a row. Caught me out a few times when I had faulty USB devices attached or a malfunctioning drive.

I kept going back in to reset everything until I finally combed through the bios in detail and figured out which switch was causing it to happen. Just check that before you assume a virus.

It's good when you finally sort out a problem like that, well done.

yes that is quite common. I normally disable my Bios so that nothing can change any settings but something got through this time .
I run anti virus checks daily as a programmed task but before you clone a drive you need to check everything or you'll just clone the problems as well. I'll have a clear out and uninstall any unused softeware and maybe a defrag as well.

Nothing quite gets under my skin like a pc malfunctioning. Last time it was finally traced to the cmos battery misbehaving. Took me a while to find that out. Battery changed, bios sorted, the birds started singing again and the sun came out...

To clarify, I did suggest restoring the data before you reformatted then re-installed. It doesnt (or shouldnt) take 8 hours. You did say you connected the drive up as a slave so I assume you have a spare PC.

Even if it does take 8 hrs, its a small price to pay if indeed it is a hard drive on its way out. That way you dont lose any(more) data.

thanks Beanz ...my whole world stopped yesterday. I couldn't even access my bank account. I have plenty of spare laptops and PC's but only one is used and has all the passwords and ID's etc
I even tested the voltage on my bios backup battery

I have 36 laptops and 6x PC's but it didn't help me much yesterday. I repair/refurbishe laptops as a hobby /second income.
My drive takes longer than 8 hours to restore manualy but it is a business machine and has a huge amount of software on it for Audio, Video and image editing and goodness knows what else.

Formatting is always the last resort. One should always attempt to restore the drive first especially when you know it is a simple conflict or setting problem as I knew it was.

I shall clone the drive this morning as I always do .Unfortunately the back up I had made previously hadn't been updated recently so was out of date

If you make a list of everything in your 'add remove programs' you'll be surprised how much there is installed and each program takes time to install and then configure .

Even simple things like adobe, and winzip and Power DVD, Zone alarm, Avast, Firefox, printer software and drivers and Nero suite etc etc all has to be installed which takes a surprising amount of time.Then I have Corel suite Office suite Works, Illustrator, Autocad, Publisher , CCTV software,Picassa, Netgear, network,Image editing software, Family history software and the list goes on.

Peanut, ever thought about using some imaging software to keep an image of your functional system? makes a rebuild darn fast, and if you keep your docs on a different partition and backed up it is never too big a nightmare if the worst happens.

interesting concept but a Raid 1 array would not unfortunately fit in my ITX Shuttle case unless I used slower 2.5" drives and it wouldn't have helped in this particular case would it. Neither of the drives would have been accessable because the problem was with the bios configuration

Thats exactly what I always do.

I have been using Norton's Ghost for about 6 years now and every PC or laptop I sell or repair I clone the hard drive onto a gash 10 Gb or 20Gb drive and store it on the shelf.

The problem is its only as good as the most recent clone and in my case I hadn't ghosted my main PC drive for several months.
Backup isn't an issue I back up regularly with nero to DVD its all the ID names and passwords and security codes etc for upwards of 25 forums 3x bank accounts . Companies House for two Ltd Companies .Broadband CCTV firewalls etc etc etc
If you don't keep a written record or ghost every week its surprising how difficult life becomes when you lose your PC.

No problem,as well as my own regular job, I look after about 15 work stations in work as well as the network internet access and email server, and one of them falling over is always very stressful

If you have an identical HDD kicking around, swap the board for your dodgy one over and try again.

The main chips usually go pop on them at this time of year because they are always put in a part of the case which never sees the output of the fans.

Have you got any anti virus software like mcfee or Norton,if so uninstall them and try rebooting.It worked for me
