When I went to Mallorca last year I took my bike and rode from the airport to Port de Pollenca. In April I am going back but without the bike.

What is the cheapest way to get up to Port de Pollenca?

At the moment, renting a car for the week for £60 seems by far the best option.

Resorthoppa ,,,Ive used to get up to that neck of the woods and its about £15 / £20 return. Its basically a minibus that does a few stops but will stop at your hotel. (Pollensa is shown as Puerto de pollensa in the arrival resort box on the link) The only reason I say that is that Pollensa on its own comes up at a silly price and private transfer only.

Thanks for that Doog. It is far cheaper than using the normal transfers, but still £5 more than having the car for the whole week, so I think we will hire the car.

That price has gone up. I paid £25 for the car for ten days in February. Personally though I would prefer the Resorthopper. It is less hassle than the car. You have to be aware that Car hire will try very hard to sell you the extra liability insurance at the airport on pickup. This can add £50 to the hire price. Plus they rip you off on the full tank of petrol thing.

Jim,

I do a lot of travelling. They will not sell me the extra cover and the car will be useful for getting around and getting back to the airport for a 10 am departure. I always return the rental cars full, you have to be an idiot not to.

I've not had that option of returning full for years. They only give you that option on a three day hire. Let me know the name of the one that will let you do that.
The insurance IMO is necessary for piece of mind IMO. But I buy it in the UK for £19.

If there is a group of you, yes car hire is probably close in price. Im going to Mallorca in June but am hesitating on booking a car over exactly the same issues being discussed above. Spammed for more Insurance at the airport and being charged for a tank of fuel that I will struggle to use. What are the insurance implications of not taking their 'extra cover' plus whats the current situation with fuel...do you pay for a whole tank or do they add it to you credit card or can you return it full ?

The way it always worked when I have hired a car is that you get a full tank included in the hire price. You either return it full or you let them fill it up for you. If they fill it up they must use liquid gold because thats the price they charge you. When I return it to the guys at the parking lot (who are always more sensible than the girls in the office) I make sure they look round the car with me and check the fuel and note on the paper that it is full. I have never been charged for extra fuel.

I have never taken extra cover and have driven all over Europe. I live in Denmark so driving on the wrong side of the road is natural to me. If you take the extra cover and you are in a scrape, you dont have to pay anything. If you dont take the extra insurance there is an excess of €600, I believe, depending on the damage. As I say, I have never had to use it.

I have never had any problems with rental cars. The girls on the desk must work on commission for the extra insurance and can be pushy. I did once have to say " Which part of no Thank you are you having problems with". But usually it is fine. I always write down all my details before I get to the desk including mobile number, accomodation address and telephone number. They always need it and it saves trying to explain. I think it also gives them the idea that you know the procedure pretty well.

You don't need the extra cover. Till you need it. The €600 is deducted from your credit card and held until you return the car.
Re the fuel. I'm still unaware of any rental company that does not charge you for a tank of fuel. They always ask for it to be returned empty. Of course on a small island this is unlikely and you lose the remainder of the fuel left in the tank. It's been this way for many years and was like that 3 weeks ago.
Can you let me have the name of your rental company as if this is indeed as you describe I will consider using them on my next trip.
last month Goldcar in Palma charged me for the full tank in a Fiesta. €80! Liquid gold as you say. Goldcar do not charge for body damage as our car had a dint when we picked it up. However if the car is in an accident or written off you can be paying out a lot of money.

resorthoppa it is then, done the place to death in hire cars
Jim. do a search for Hertz refuelling options. There are 3 options.

Hertz prices are horrendous if booked direct in the UK....

Looking at Holiday autos who offer a far more competitive quote. they only offer the pick up return empty over 4 days, under 3 you can return full. Then dont even start on the insurance options. Ive done Mallorca to death in a hire car twice, Its resorthoppa for me and the family... £60 return and no pressure to drive anywhere. might get the bus into Palma for a day out.

So how do you get around Doog, or do you just stay in one place for the holiday?

We want to get out into the mountains. The Master plan was to get a Vespa once we got to Pollenca.

Steve, Ive done the place to death in a hire car before. The vespa sounds good for the mountains though, this time I might take public transport however.
