Now, a local charity I volunteer for want's to make a bike rack for the volunteers to lock their bikes to. Being a charity, they can't shell out for a load of bits of specialised iron bars to be bolted to the floor..

One clever chap came up with the idea of welding a plethora of frames together, to make "wheelbender" bike racks. Not a problem, as 99% of people there ride MTb's with fairly strong wheels.

His plan is to take an angle grinder to a load of bikes, behind the top tub and down tube, leaving only the seatpost, and rear seat/chain stays, which would provide a fairly nifty place to slot in a front wheel....

Many many of these cut down bikes would be welded together, and the end result would be an immovable (without a forklift or similar) bike rack, that dosen't need planning permission... (as it's not bolted to the ground).

Obviously all the frames would have to be steel, as aluminium is a bit tricky to weld....

Ideas? suggestions? improvements?

Ah - a moveable bike rack when working in the 'field'...becomes an 'immoveable' object when the bikes are attached. Bonus.......

Sounds a good idea, but with the caveat - don't attach an expensive bike to it with a QR wheel.........

Ahhh like that BB idea.. I don't think anyone there is silly enough to lock a bike through a QR wheel.

However at college, where the academic "elite haha" are supposed to reide, I've seen a few bikes now locked through the QR, and then seen a wheel locked to a rack with no bike, later in the day... Silly - bet they'll never do that again!!

We get donations from public, and anything that has a damaged frame, gets stripped down for spares and then the frame goes for scrap... this way the frames are going to be used for somthing, as opposed to being turned into... CARS!!!!.... NOOO!!!!!!!
