Making a toilet seat!!!

Well, I'm fortunate in having a standard bog seat. I bought a clear plastic one with shells & other things in, quite fetching and very unusual.

Still, I'd rather be in the position where I have an old house with a non-standard loo than in my modern(ish) galleried house! and be wondering how to get a joiner made loo-seat. Modern boxes......

There was hilarious comedy based on the antics of a carpenter that made nothing but bog seats. I'm sure the title was something like "The Craftsman" and starred Eric Sykes". Very similar to "The Plank" in its concept. Cannot find any trace of it anywhere

I'm puzzled - what is so special about the original bog seat. Is it some funny shape or size?

Just a word of warning - wood is pourous - i.e. it sucks up moisture (even when varnished).

And bodily fluids are moist.

So bodily fluids + wooden loo seat = .... well, lets just say that after a year or two no amount of cleaning will get rid of the smell xx(xx(xx(xx(xx(xx(;)

So I discovered when I had a wooden loo seat! I've switched to plastic now.

Can you buy a plastic one and cut it to size?

I was told that, and to be honest I have seen some awful examples of that type.

I spotted one that looked really good, however, and bought that about 7 years ago. I reckon the varnish was pressure-impregnated; it still looks like new and it cleans up well.

I was teaching plumbing at college a couple of years ago. I still do a bit of water plumbing and ground works but not gas.
I'm also an electrician.

Cheers, Walnut is fine to work with, a little costly in big lumps though.
Limitations will depend on what you want. Some processes are not suited to my workshop and other processes are just labour intensive. Really depends on what you would like and how we can make it possible within your budget and time frame.
Generally I would say, find some images of furniture or woods that you like to make a 'like/dislike' design board with. You can then show what shapes you like, design styles, colours of the wood and also what you don't like. From there we can develop a design that is individual and suits your needs.

Make a paper or card template of the outline of the bowl that you want it to fit to, or if you still have the old one to use as a pattern. Do you have specific hardware for the hinges to match the bowl/cystern? I can work to that if you have it or I can just make the seat and lid and you can find and fit your own.
A photograph of the plan view of the bowl showing hinge positions and a side view showing the cistern relative to the bowl may help to make it fit if it is non standard.
We are talking basic and machined though otherwise it will cost many hundreds for a hand made seat!
