I cannot put my finger on the whole reason, it just did not do it for us. Buses where useless, hotel worse than useless, beach useless, just nothing did it at all.
As you can see though others love it.

They also shoot from low level (4'?) shelters that face the sea, made of local stone blocks. Its amazing how many of them just fell over while I was there a couple of years ago !

Sounds subjective as suggested, just struggling to think of somewhere else that ticks the sunshine and sightseeing boxes, that none of us have been to before. Quite widely travelled as a group!

When we went a couple of years ago we hired an apartment ourselves in Birgu - one of the ancient cities sticking out into Grand Harbour, narrow streets - had to leave the hire car in a car park down by the marina. Walked past one of the Auberges of the Knights of Malta (can't remember which one) to get to the apartment - that's history for you. Can get a dgħajsa (pronounced dysa) across Grand Harbour to Valetta, or a water-bus type thing very easily. Plenty of history, from prehistoric temples, to the Knights of St John and the Seige of Malta in 15??, Malta in WW2 and the famous convoys keeping it supplied to stop the italians getting it. The British occupiers left in 1978 - the government at the time was in Ghaddafi's pocket, but many of the population had a soft spot for the British. If you like history and sightseeing, go for it.

I always have this mental image that it will be a bit like Gibraltar - Full of slightly offensive and nauseating wannabe Brits with Union flags everywhere.

I grew up there as my parents worked there. Its a great Island as long as you are not going for a beach holiday. The temples are some of the best in the world, the stunning churches..Mosta being one of the best. Valletta is a beautiful city. Mdina is a must see. They drive on the Left.....badly, but on the left. Everyone speaks english etc etc.
I would (and always do) stay around St Juliens, lots of good places to eat around Spinola bay. Hire a car if you can, the buses arent great and its quite good fun to drive in a country where road traffic rules dont apply. DO get the damage insurance!
Like others have said, you either love it or hate it. Like the local soft drink "Kinnie" made with bitter orange. not too be missed.

Nope - it's a lot bigger than Gibraltar, for a start (although it's still not big). And the Maltese have their own language and culture. The Brits were only there from about 1800.

My youngest son lives in St Juliens and loves it there, finds the
Maltese generally friendly and very relaxed. I'll get some more info on nice areas and post again.
It's not good for bikes... mad drivers and very busy roads, big drinking culture too.

Agreed - don't bother trying to cycle. The roads either are very busy, or have absolutely dire surfaces. And some of the locals drive like maniacs. Driving a hire car isn't too bad as they drive on the left, so you only have the traffic to deal with and don't have to think about being on the 'wrong' side of the road as well.

I've never seen anywhere as "Marmite" as Malta. We went a few years ago with In-Laws(pre-Diglets), late deal, unspecified location. It was £150 pp incl villa +small pool and car, so even back then a bit of a bargain. We ended up on Gozo which was fine as Mrs D's family have friends on Malta itself so we could spend some time with them but enough opportunity for peace and quiet on another land mass. I really liked it but can understand people who love beach holidays not being huge fans

The local beer is called Cisk. Its pronounced Chisk and well worth a pint or 2!
