I would have liked to have seen a base line test, both riders on the same bike to understand how different their power and fitness levels were. Then the differences in finishing times on different bikes would have some context.

The adage that it's not the bike still holds true, of course bike choice impacts performance, but at a much reduced level of impact as fitness, technique, experience, etc,etc.

the £250 hybrid vs. the £6K carbon certainly showed it's not about the bike.... the Dutch shopper and Boris bike simply lacked the gearing to challenge.

Didn't realise the price of the BMC that's a hella lot of bike for the money, but hardly a tour bike it was running Ultegra for a start

Yes had the piece been presented by a Daily Mail journalist it would have been far more superior . Im purely an FT reader anyway anything else is just inferior.

A much better comparison would be the pro rider timed on a triban and the BMC to see how much time the better bike actually offers.

I thought they should have done the BMC vs the £250 bike race again at the end as the journal was clearly getting better as he got more used to the bike. That first lap wasn't great at all. That said I still think the pro would have won.
