Since when has it become acceptable to drive on the hard shoulder when it's not open to relive congestion? I cant believe the amount of clueless morons I've seen today blissfully cruising along on the hard shoulder, obviously not paying attention to instruction or they wouldn't be there. Then we have the cretins that seem to think its OK to get onto the hard shoulder a long way before the exit markers. Did I miss the memo?

Will they not get busted by the vast array of cameras controlling the system?

I'll see your driving along the hard shoulder and raise you one idiot taking a sleep on the cross hatchings because he was tired.

Saw exactly the same thing on the M6 last Saturday. Lane clearly shut off with the red X and yet still drivers using the hard shoulder. Is it any wonder we get annoyed with drivers when they can't even see a ruddy big red sign

To be fair, the whole concept of managed motorway somewhat undermines the concept that the hard shoulder is unsafe or unsuitable for driving, or that a distinguishing feature of a motorway is that it has a hard shoulder. Not excusing the drivers who do it when they shouldn't, but sometimes our road designers send out mixed messages. It's like when they first introduced compulsory turn off left lanes, thereby at a stroke undermining the psychology that lane 1 is always the place to be.

I often wonder how the hell some people get driving licence? How do they actually pass the driving test? People who do such idiotic things on our roads should be banned for life. I would also like to see those with foreign licences having to take a UK driving test. I have nothing against foreigners, but most of them come here from countries with little or no driving laws and even less road sense, and most have been driving on the right, especially europeans.

That's alright then.

In mitigation, smart M-ways are a relatively new innovation so there's maybe a fair few people who are genuinely confused by them. (I know, they're signed, people need to keep up with new developments etc etc...)

If people are genuinely confused by a sign that is a big red cross then they really shouldn't be behind the wheel. Not exactly rocket science is it? Even my 4 year old points it out to daddy from the back seat that a big cross is for 'the naughty people'
