Hi My Marin Sausalito got nicked a few weeks ago and I am now dealing with my insurance company to get a replacement. I had not realised that they would chose a new bike for me when I insured my bike?!?! How bizarre. Anyway, they are suggesting a Specialized Crosstrail 2014 as a comparable replacement. Does anyone have anything good or bad to say about this bike? I loved my sausalito and it cost £565 in 2000. The speciailized is only £400 and I feel I am maybe not getting as good a bike but I have no idea and don't have time to go to a bike shop to check it out. I use my bike mostly for short journeys, sometimes with children and sometimes off road/trails. Many thanks

Do you have a link to the specs of the two bikes? Did the Marin have lock out for for example? Disc brakes? £400 Crosstrail will be a basic entry level, I'd be seeking like for like spec, even though you likely won't get the same value back. Is there also an excess on the insurance policy

Don't have spec for Marin - it did not have lock out and only had v-brakes but it was a great bike to ride. I don't think it would have been classed as entry level at the time I bought it but difficult to prove that now as I don't think the Sausalito is still made. But thanks.

Not here offten enough to argue
suerly your not going to get the same spec as a 14yr old marin. why are they dictating what bike you get and cant you suggest alternatives upto the insured value??

Some insurance companies have a deal with bike suppliers (i think) but when my bike got nicked 10 years ago I did a deal with my insurance company that they paid my local independent bike shop directly for me to get the bike of my choice (up to the value of the one I had nicked). Maybe your insurance company will agree to the same with a bit of negotiation?

I bought my replacement bike before the settled they sent m a cheque. You need to fin out how muh they'll cough up though, might be hard if they go on depreciation. £400 sounds very fair if the bike was £600 14 years ago
