i started wtching this last night , he was crossing afghanistan and iran, india and pakistan.

fascinating... this man is mad ! mad but inspirational.

Not mad, just driven... or something. It's touring but with the added pressure of trying to beat the fastest time yet recorded for the distance. It's good - entertaining and touching. His facial hair growth is frightening(!), but he looks in good shape so far after several thousand miles. The loved one comented last night that the lone (except for police escorts) cycle accross Pakistan and Afganistan is not something that could be attempted by a lone woman, even if she was dressed in salwar kameez on the bike (not shorts) she would still attract a lot of attention and would probably be more at risk of kidnap, robbery or sexual assault than a man. I watched it the night before last as well, where he left Paris and went accross Europe. I'll be watching it tonight (well, taping it, as I will be tucked up in bed by that time). He's cycling through the Monsoon season in Thailand tonight!

i rarely watch tv when mrs is on nights, but i've been drawn to this. Its really got me wanting to do longer rides. You cant help but admire the man for his attitude.. I especially liked the bit where he said 'they've warned me not to cycle this road, its too dangerous'......then he looks at the camera, smiles and goes and does it anyway.

Ditto. Present company excepted, the difference in gender arose during the first episode on Monday:-

Her: "Why would he do this. What makes him want to do it?"

Me:"Why haven't I done this?"

Seriously, I wouldn't want to attempt the world record, but the trip round the world on the bike is very appealing. Less so to my wife obviously.

I said as a throwaway remark on Monday that he is doing it to avoid going to work. At which point he said on the programme something about people criticising him and saying he doesn't want to work for a living.............

Great prog and a great effort by the man. He is one driven guy. Makes you feel like a lazy git though. Wish the prog was a bit longer though. You just wonder what he can do now to challenge himself as he such a young guy as he's obviously driven to challenges and pushing himself to the limit.

Another vote for this Mark and the prog, and for the Rohloff speedhub that he used. Damn good all round stuff.

Great programme - don't forget coverage will be a bit limited - the camera crew only caught up in 'civilised' areas.... thought they did well with the pakistan coverage/editing, considering he had no vid camera.

Tonight's he get's 'duffed up' in the more 'civilised' parts of the world...hmmmm

I watched this earlier in the year; and i'd easily watch it again.

He could make buckets if he brought out a DVD of the whole ride.

As I understand some of the footage wasn't used.

The series rounded out to 20mins a go - sometimes longer, but generally 20min.

I'll say it again: he is one hell of a re-markable cyclist.

On the end of the series it points out he did 13 TdF's backtoback: now that alone is one hell of an achievement - then add in he was generally on his own - then, he only had 1 bike !

He should be a hero = well he is to me: a real ultimate guy.

Noo words can describe what he did, its to good for words.
