Schoolboy, 12, 'almost decapitated' after he rides into rope deliberately strung across bridge at head height

  • Euan Cusack was on a bike ride with friends when he cycled straight into a taught rope tied by suspected pranksters
  • He was injured on a footbridge in Treeharris, near Merthyr Tydfill, South Wales
  • Left with deep cuts and rope burns on his face and neck

Good Christ, that's horrific.

Sadly they never catch buggers who do this.

"Almost decapitated" is a bit strong, but it's a horrible shitty thing to do.

We dont know what grade the rope is. If its like some 1-2mm fishing line I have seen, then yes it could decapitate with the right speed. A recumbent rider got it bad a few years back - severed the artery in his neck and he had to pinch it shut iirc. His neck will most likely suffer a form of whiplash, too, I'd imagine.

Oh and the Parris thing goes back to his Times column where he suggested piano wire should be strung across shared paths and parks to decapitate cyclists. In the article he professed his hatred of us, but after a raft of complaints he tried to assert it was "a joke".

Stewart Lee and topgear springs to mind

In early 1994 I drove a Land Rover through a taut wire at windscreen height between two trees on a forest track. Both my passenger and I saw it glinting with dew a fraction of a second before we snapped it. There was no time to brake. We were taking a short cut through a place we ought to have avoided. After that, we used a different route. If I'd had time to empty my bowels and bladder when I saw the wire, I think I would have done just that.

The story of the little chappie in the OP is ghastly. I fear the miscreants will not be caught. I'm not sure what could be done to them if they were... I imagine they are children.

I'm jolly glad the boy has what look like only superficial injuries. It could have been much worse; it's a good thing it wasn't.

I'm a bit concerned the new local MTB trail near me might be subject to such 'pranks'. It is in an urban woodland i.e very near lots of houses. I intend to do a slow cycle round before really going for it when I do any loops.

Can't be too careful. There's some nasty people out there. Sad to say.

There have been quite a few incidents like this since he wrote his article.

I hope he gets bombarded with hassle each time it happens - I remember his insincere and crappy "apology" which he only wrote after a massive campaign of sensibleness from cyclists pointing out his stupidity.

I have a horrible feeling he still drives around like Mr Toad dreaming of stringing up cyclists that hold him up for 1 second.

Here's only a tiny part of his tirade.

"A festive custom we could do worse than foster would be stringing piano wire across country lanes to decapitate cyclists"

There's plenty more about how "a lynching of cyclists would be a joy to behold"

His reply that it was a hilarious joke doesn't really wash, unless, as Hip Priest says (and reading his other columns I agree) he is a cretin or just a slightly thick, sad and hate-filled individual.

Parris said: "I offended many with my attack on cyclists. It was meant humorously but so many cyclists have taken it seriously that I plainly misjudged. I am sorry."
