well i just got told at work today that we have to go down to a four day week and as things are already tight since the overtime was stopped four months ago i really need to start watching the pennies.

so, i've decided to try commuting by bike full time. it's about 12miles each way (rugby-daventry) 4 days a week.

if i use the hybrid i can cut through town by using the "old railway line/cycle network" route

I'm posting on here so i cant back out

similar happened to me about 2 months ago put on 4 day week no signs of going back to full time yet.Make sure you ask about the government scheme that pays £21.50 for lay off days,we get paid 5 of these every 13 weeks, not much I know but softens the blow a little.
I worked out I save about £10 in diesel cost for every week I cycle in(18.5 miles per day)

I filled the car at the beginning of may and it's still got a quarter of a tank left! Definitely helps the bank balance commuting every day. Unfortunately the short journeys across town has farked the exhaust which fell off at the weekend :bravo:

My husband made us buy an 10 year old fully loaded BMW 540 estate when our daughter was born a year and a half ago. We needed the extra space for the pram apparently.....it had NOTHING to do with the engine size of course. Suffice to say, we now both cycle the 14 mile round commute and can almost justify the beast parked in the driveway as a result!

Similar has happened to me we lost shifts last year and now we have lost 2 days a month with lay off.

That works out close to £400 a month short in wages , things are pretty hairy to say the least .

I have now upped my commute to every day , this week was a 5 day week and it clocked just a tad over 104 miles , thats on a 26" hybrid and some sucky hills .my average overall clocks 16.5 mph and on the flat i average around 20 mph.

Work have said that its going to be like this till next year assuming i have a house :becool: Looked for other work and even part time but to no avail , relatives have agreed to pay a loan off for us and we will pay it back when we can.

yeah, it's crappy isn't it  although the boss has said i can book my remaining holidays (about 7 days) as Fridays and so get a full weeks wage for a bit longer.

i just spent a couple of hours getting the bike ready. re-fitted the thinner handle bars (thinner as in width, not tube size) and a new set of mudguards. also fitted a computer (yes it's true, it had no computer till now )

so it's had a bit of money spent on it but i can get this back on saved petrol in the first week, well thats what i told the wife, so I'm kinda committed to doing it now :becool:

looking forward to it actually. gonna do a dry run over the weekend to get an idea of journey time :becool:
