But is it not more illogical to filter to the front only to be overtaken again? That is my point.

depends. If the traffic lights only allow 2 cars through, or there is some doddery old lady in a nissan micra who will take a year to pull away then it does make sense to get to the front

Glad to read everyone's point, I just find it a tad hypocritical to start a thread on 'must pass cyclist' yet we are guilty of the same sin. (and all the other lame excuses that go with it.)

I was simply asking the question why ? I was trying to see this from the drivers side but fail to understand some peoples thinking, how is that hypocritical ?

I agree with lee that filtering is often pretty useless, "must overtake car syndrome", so I only do it if there is something unpleasant in the road layout or I have a bin-van or sandcrawler behind me. Being regularly panniered up I'm used to being too wide to filter, which I find quite relieving to be honest! I find drivers and other cyclists sometimes get a bit funny with you if you don't have an excuse to not be sneaking up the inside of a bendy bus, cyclists give you this "do you know something that I don't know?" look, and then shoot you a dirty glance as they filter off again for holding them up.

I find it's much worse with buses stopping to pick up passengers though, people feel an absolute compulsion to overtake regardless of what's coming the other way... especially as a cyclist, when the bus will just overtake you again anyway (and you get a lovely, precious moment of warmth in the winter as you wait behind, mmm pollution!).

I must admit that I'm struggling to type this, as it may be seen as showing agreement with Lee and BM, but the hypocritical part for me is that you complain about car drivers who whizz past and cut in really close to to get in front of you, and then say that then ride past them and drop into the ASL.

Riding down the road approaching traffic lights going at a fair pace (20mph +) when Joe Public whizzes past me and cuts in really close just to get in front of me before the traffic lights for which they have to stop for, I then ride past and drop into the cycle box at the front at the lights and then carry on my way when the signal changes to green.

Why oh Why do people do this ? What do they intend to gain ? Another 10 feet on my position but for what reason as the traffic is heavy in our town ?
Is it not possible that your riding past is not the exact same action as that you are criticising in the drivers?

How about if I were to ask what you were hoping to gain from using the ASL? Another 10 feet? And then you are at risk from the same driver when they have to overtake again.

My observation has been that the close passers and nip in brigade are almost 100% kerb crawlers, they seek comfort by following the kerb, safe passers are middle of the road or whitle line followers. When I get a fairly close pass on an empty road they nearly all return to driving pretty close to the kerb, so to them it was a wide pass!

Your kerb crawlers are London black cab scum er I mean drivers.

I was outside a London train terminus this week and had just got on my bike and had this black cab hooting me to get out of his way. They really are absolutely the worst drivers out there because they know exactly what they're doing and they do it very deliberately, it is not random at all but very calculated which makes them very dangerous.
