I've recently come back from a long weekend there and it is great to see so much happy, peaceful and functional use of bicycles. If only...

Wearing a helmet in Holland will have you pointed and screeched at al a "Invasion of the Body Snatchers"...

I'd a dutch bike once. Hurtle you could not. I never wore a helmet. When it was frosty I did fall off on my commute but I used my SAS survival skills to rebound completely unscathed and ready to attack the nearest bystander.

There would be apoplexy here if that occurred in Britain. People riding on the rear rack, only one person in the whole video wearing a helmet....... If they ride like that the Dutch will have all killed themselves in a year or so.

Old enough to know better, too old to care!
I had a weekend in Amsterdam some time ago and, as in the video, saw hundreds of cyclists, mainly on big, heavy looking sit-up-and-beg roadsters and often blonde, pretty and short skirted  with a similar friend perched on the luggage rack. Over the course of a few days I saw 12 helmets. Half of them were worn by rollerbladers in Vondel Park and a couple of Segway borne city guides. Of the remainder, 3 were on the heads of a group of lycra clad roadies out for a ride and the rest were worn by British (I think) tourists.
