Mega horn

Some time last year I bought a Mega horn because I was fed up with pedestrians wandering willynilly over the shared path I use regularly but I never fitted it because SWMBO reckoned it was far too loud and could be dangerous , well I was having a clean up last week and decided to give it a trial.
No one took any notice of it. Though it was loud and piercing it was completely ignored so I was back to using the bell and voice, both of which were taken notice of.
On the the way home this afternoon I met an old work mate out with her really charming twin girls on their stabilized bikes, took the horn off my bike and give it to her to fit to one of theirs.
At least the bairns can have a laugh at it when they use it but I will stick to bell and voice.

On shared paths, I slow down to walking pace and make a noisy gear change quite close behind other people using it. They usually look round, step aside and smile when I thank them as I go on my way. What worries me is that quite a few of them spring aside in horror as soon as they see a cyclist behind them.

We don't have a reputation for good manners , do we?

I make a point of slowing down and saying 'thank you' when some one steps aside and if they have children or dogs I virtually crawl pass them or even stop. As their is nothing as unpredictable as children or dogs.

For variety, sometimes leave off the "please" at the end of your exhortation. Substitute "Excuse me" at the start.

Actually just "fark off, daffodil" has the virtue of brevity.

I don't do crowded shared paths but on back lanes I tend to find peds OK but you do need to give them a warning some way back, it seems to take them ages to realise a bike is there.

As a cyclist and a walker, I hate bicycle bells. They should be banned from bikes. People with air horn things should be banned from cycling.

I have had to resort back to bell & voice now that I have lost the harmonica playing toddler - that worked well... although if she is in the weehoo she sometimes still sings loudly which helps, on her own two wheels she has no use as a warning of approach.
