Loads of questions coming up here, beware! First, some background...
There's obviously a limit to how much data you can store on an Edge. Once full, it overwrites the older data. Better that than to stop recording imo! Thing is, you don't really know when that's going to happen so I only tend to have maybe half a dozen rides on it before downloading it all and deleting it.
I suspect the memory is just one big pot too, as opposed to divided between routes and ride history. So the bigger the track(s) you have on it, the less space for ride history.
I started my 600 audax last weekend with no ride history on the unit and just the route loaded. Come the end, I'd lost the first 20ish km of ride history. The overall ride totals were correct but no details (location, heart rate, cadence, etc). Similar thing happened when I did LEL in 2009; I lost maybe a quarter to a third of the details.
I'd like to manage this a bit better. Particularly with PBP in mind. When I spoke to my wife about it (great conversations we have sometimes!) she suggested buying a 2nd Edge - one for the way out, one for the way back! It'd work
Short of me accepting that it overwrite the details (but taking solace in that the overall totals will be correct) OR taking a laptop with me and downloading the data on-route, I'm not sure there's a lot to do.
Is there anyway of knowing how much memory has been used? How much is left? How that equates to number of km, etc etc etc.
Can I reduce track size? Something like having fewer points per km or something (I don't know how tracks are stored btw)
Would turning off the cadence and HRM features reduce the history file size significantly?
Any other ideas or thoughts or suggestions?
I'm going to ask on the Garmin forums too but thought maybe the CC resident gurus might have some ideas.
