I used to regularly work Christmas day or night (Police) and tbh it was no great hardship. Well compensated financially and it was usually an easy shift. You still get to do the Christmas stuff before/after work, and had a good craic with your workmates too.
New Year on the other hand was a nightmare - busiest night of the year and mostly violence. Horrible shift to work, and if you started at 11pm on Hogmanay for the night shift, it didn't even count as a public holiday - so no extra cash!

I used to do panto professionally and I remember, after a show on Christmas Eve, a drive through the night and a blurry recovery over Christmas Day, having to go back on Boxing Day morning to do the next show and just bursting into tears with fatigue and the awfulness of leaving everyone to go back to my dismal digs (panto is germy and knackering). Compared to that, actually working on Christmas Day must take a particular strength and I salute all those who do it!
