It's the mice doing the persecuting round here.
yep and I am most definitely feeling picked on at the moment. little blighters raiding my cupboards at night, eating my raw rice, pasta, beans, peas, fruit... back to having to keep everything I can in the fridge as the only viable 'they can't get at it' solution. (said cupboard has the stop-cock in it with a really big hole around it that they have chewed... think the expand foam will be coming out soon)

Edit: OK the fruit is not in the cupboard, but on top of a set of drawers in a fruit bowl - or was until they ate it...

We get all sorts of mice and critters brought in by the cats. None are in the house of their own accord. Where feasible we grab them and put them back outside and let them get on with life.

I would never wish any animal to suffer. When you find mouse poo in the crumb tray of your toaster, your attitude hardens. BTW, releasing a mouse elsewhere after catching it in a humane trap is like lobbing dogshit into your neighbour's garden.

Which is why you release them on open ground, not your neighbour's garden. The humane traps work very well IME.

I've been there. They drove me nuts. You have my sympathy.

house mice (which is what we are talking about here) are nowhere near extinction...
I never said they were but they have as much right to live as anything else. This and that fact that a lethal trap does not distinguish species. Dormice, bank voles, birds and all manner of protected species have been found in traps in some very unlikely places.
Killing innocent wildlife is both barbaric and not required but some people just will not be told.
If it were not for gamekeepers killing those pest, Hen Harriers, Britain could sustain 500 breeding pairs.

thanks - didn't mind it when it was field mice (though some polyfiller was used when their holes were tracked down...) but being woken in the night by house mice scampering across the bathroom floor (tiles) is driving me mad, not to mention the obvious health issues of them running up and down kitchen work surfaces and over pots & pans etc...

Indeed, I reckon about a million more are born in the time it takes my ever so slightly evil cat to kill one!
please keep them down there. I don't need any more of them up here. The local owl & buzzard population are not doing a very good job of visibly keeping the numbers down (not sure buzzards actually eat them but we have a really good number of buzzards around here) and sadly our neighbours Irish Wolfhound just sits and watches them nothing more! Even the smell of him in our house is not deterring them!

I've not had a mouse in the house for a while now, there may be a shortage or perhaps Harry can't be arsed. Rather he brought mice than birds and especially slimy things like frogs and worms, blech

Does anyone need a cat house sitting for their holiday? (wonders if that might work...)

Edit: must be good at catching them and trained not to bring any prizes into the house...
Keep the cat in the house, can't bring any more in...most will happily torment and kill free roaming meeses though!
