Middle-Class Gadget of the Week: The Stove Fan

It was a reference to a pointless Christmas gewgaw that relies on convection to sparkle in the candle light and clank out a dreary tune - I'm sure I can find a picture of one on the internet later.

Christmas isn't Christmas in our house without one of those .....

Just looked that one up, looks exactly the same, must be a factory somewhere turning the same design out for different folks. Did you see they also sell stove glass cleaner?!

I've got one of these fans - I have a woodburner in a big funny-shaped room (ie, not so much L-shaped as L-and-a-bit-shaped) and it's brilliant, and I've bought them for family members too.

The fans are cleverly done - mine seems to work on a bi-metal strip arrangement that completes a small electric circuit. You can pick them up when they are hot by a little wire handle at the back which stays cool.

Waste of money if you're asking me. With a proper register plate closing the gap around your stove pipe, all the rising heat is going to be retained in the room anyway.

I've filed the idea along with kitchen foil behind the radiators.

If you have a funny-shaped room, or indeed a very long room, it is very definitely worth it. I can feel the difference very distinctly. I have two other woodburners in the house in much more regular rooms and I don't bother with a fan in those.

I haven't bothered - they're warm enough. But if I don't use it in the funny-shaped room you get cold spots. The F-S-R is also quite long so any warm air has a good chance of being cooled right down by the time it convects to the far end - the fan effect definitely helps get it there while still warm.

My sister has a small-ish stove in a large long room and she finds the fan makes a difference there too (can't have a larger stove as it had to be positioned under the existing chimney and would have stuck out too far).

Nothing like a heart(h)y endorsement, threefinsmcginty! In Finland these things are compulsory in every home that has a wood burning stove, and the Dutch government are seeking a vote on the same topic; the spin doctors are out in force.
