Middle lane hoggers.

Does this mean the end to my middle lane driving pleasure? Last bit of the M62 heading to my beloved home city of Hull traversed in the dark hours of the early morning. After all, who the hell else would be going there at that time in a morning? An almost empty road, a glimpse of a tail light ahead, a flicker of a headlight in the mirror, who exactly am I holding up?
And come to think of it, as it's an unlit M-way it's probably safer in the middle lane for me and anybody unfortunate enough to be broken down on the hard shoulder, m'lud.

The minimum distance that should be considered is long enough that you'd feel comfortable moving in & then out again while being able to deal with the car travelling behind you overtaking you without being concerned about getting uncomfortably close to the vehicle in front of you. IMO.

The minimum distance that should be considered is long enough that you'd feel comfortable moving in & then out again while being able to deal with the car travelling behind you overtaking you without being concerned about getting uncomfortably close to the vehicle in front of you. IMO.

...and this is part of the problem... different people have different levels of comfort. I don't drive very much, and do stick to 70 on motorways (except if I decide to move to the outer lane if there are 3 lanes, in which case I reckon it is safer (if illegal) to go over 70 on the basis that on a free-flowing motorway most traffic in the outer lane will be doing well over 70) - sometimes I look at the gap between two lorries in the inside lane and decide not to move into it, and then realise that I probably could have moved into it. Those of you who drive 1000s of miles a year and can judge that sort of thing to a T should perhaps cut those of us who don't and can't a bit of slack?

Although the question of judgement of what 'hogging' constitutes is valid, (best not to google 'hogging' if you live in Alabama ) I reckon we all know that the type of behaviour in the following youtube clip is what we're really talking about... using the middle lane when the inside lane is perfectly empty. This is from Ireland, btw, but then so were my parents. So it's relevant.

The law refers to undertaking on congested motorways...

I'm saying that its an oxmoron for a motorway to be congested if someone is deemed to be "middle lane hogging"*
