A good example of the problem is that about once every 6 months I miss the M11 Madingley Rd interchange after a lorry starts an overtaking manoeuvre somewhere around the A10/M11 junction. It's more frequent for my OH who drives to work every day. The problem is once you've got to the A603/Barton interchange cars coming onto the M11 have taken up the near side lane & you've got a plug of traffic & at the mercy of drivers on the near side to leave a gap for you to get into. You talk about 0.5 miles? I'm talking about >2 miles on a regular basis. This is made worse around here by the lack of 3 lanes meaning very quickly a solid block of traffic develops making it hard to move from one lane to another.
At 40mph to 56mph you're talking about a 10 second overtaking manoeuvre not a 90 second one.
If you chose to do 50 in the inside lane as opposed to averaging 80 (90 max) in the outside lane that 1.8 miles would only take an extra 48 seconds. I'm not sure the risks are worth the time benefits
My point isn't the speed its the bottle neck & traffic stream compression caused by two lorries at near as damn it the same speed for miles on end. I have to ask if you feel that taking >4.2 mile to overtake another vehicle is acceptable.
