You could also consider taking out the http://www.backpackersclub.co.uk/" backpackers club membership which comes with a list of farmers who allow camping in their fields (not normally advertised) (aimed at lightweight camping including cycle tourers). It is not expensive, but is done by snail mail still (or at least last year before I left the UK it still was), but it is genuine and we did use some of those sites.

EDIT - corrected typo

How extensive is the farmers' field list? i.e. how many entries are there?

I am a member of the Backpackers Club. the campsite list is in two parts, the LDP (Long distance Paths) and the FPD ( Farm Pitch Directory) both provide campsite pitches for most counties and areas, however some are out of date as members and owners dont inform the Guy who looks after it. Club membership is currently £12.00 and its not only back packing but also Cyclepacking.
Hope that helps

quite a lot- it is a 58 page A4 pdf file where each farm as only a line or two. I counted more than 60 farms for Cornwall (selected at random), 6 in Hampshire. Some areas of Wales are very well covered, others not. Scotland has a surprsing number and there are some entires of EIRE mostly covering Kerry. All come with a OS Map reference and some directions/facilties etc. there are some campsite in the list and in Scotland some of the better known "wild campsites" as well. But it seemed worthwhile to us.

There is also a book called "Tiny campsites" specialist small campsites - if you can get the book 2ndhand it is useful but otherwise not.
