How are you defining miles per day? Annual mileage divided by the number of days in a year (16.5), or annual mileage divided by the number of days riding in a year (35), tour mileage divided by the number of days touring (50-60)?

Tour mileage, miles total divided by days on tour. Zero mile days bring the average down of course and those days when the campground people simply aren't there usually result in a rest day after the double or triple day before. My yearly average if we count all 365 days (even the ones with 6 feet of snow on the ground?) is maybe 3/day.

Cycling is very good for you but for some people, doing larger rides isn't necessarily a good idea as can increase inflammation and lengthen recovery time. At least not on a regular basis. The issue is more if you're doing exercise everyday, you don't give your body enough time to recover from the larger ones.

I have Crohn's disease myself and have actually made myself sick from cycling for too long in a day. It's happened on more than one occasion, each time it felt like I was coming down with the flu but only lasted for a day or two. Of course it's important you take the right supplements to aid recovery time and avoid problems mind.

I found I could easily add 50% of my training distance at the beginning of a long tour as long as was sensible about it.
Then by week 5-6, I'd have ridden to a new level of fitness and could do 100% of my training distance.
I found this was a nice daily distance for the rest of the tour.
My training distance was around 25-30 miles and a long day on tour was just over 60 miles.
