So, sore throat, congested lungs, not feeling great. Forwent usual morning ride, and slept in, got up and legs are moaning and bitching, they need a spin. Manage to convince myself that some fresh air getting deep down into the lungs will be good, but promise them we'll go easy. The legs had other ideas, what is that all about?

Does anybody else experience this? The legs just want to be happy, to have free reign and spin away. Hit a hill, and they simply put the effort in by themselves, sometimes it feels like I'm on the outside just looking in with little or no control.

Still, fresh air is always refreshing :-)

There is a Herr Voigt from the former East Germany who takes a vocal view on this matter.

I believe it is his view that the legs can be overruled by a stubborn mental attitude.

Ha - you beat me to it, but here's the video!

I'd never seen that video, and I'm quite disappointed. I always thought he said, "Shut up, legs," which is much more appropriate for me. Anyway, that's what I say now when my legs start whinging.

I think there are times when you just have to be kind to your body if it's really struggling for a genuine reason, but that's the mind's decision to make.

When I'm halfway up a steep climb, my mind and body tend to reach an amicable agreement to stop for a rest so as not to overstress the drivetrain.

If someone is struggling on a hill and you tell them it gets steeper round the next bend then ramps up for another half mile chances are they will lose the will to live and get off and walk. If you tell them it gets easier and not far to go chances are they ride all the way up.

People can achieve impossible results by mental strength.

On the steep stuff - legs aint the problem, it's the heart & lungs that are saying stop.

On the flat stuff, I definately get the legs trying to be the boss sometimes.
