Quite right.

If they'd called the things Baby Beamers, I might have thought they were cute. But to sully the name Mini....

TBH, I've never liked the proper Clubman all that much, but it's the whole theft of the name Mini I despise.

I agree that it has nothing to do with the old car, but I quite like it. I would not buy it, too expensive for what you get, but it looks quite cute. Personally, I prefer the soft top one.

have to correct you on one point.... it IS a cooper, not a mini, but cooper... yes.

the late great john cooper was very pleased with the new mini, in fact he was a realist who welcomed progress. the cooper name is licenced through his son who took over the company when JC died.

sad but true, it is a cooper

good old issigonis would of bloody hated it though

no, there never was a cooper clubman, in fact the mini clubman was partly responsible for the end of the original run of classic mini coopers, so yes BMW is really screwing around with mini history.

if it makes you feel any better, most real classic mini fans hate the BMW car as well.

PS: my user name comes from my knowledge of the classic mini

PPS: my mini, sadly now gone due to my redundancy last year  this is a real mini cooper...

I thought John Cooper had died before this horrid estate was launched?

yes, this is true, but he was very happy with the new mini and fully endorsed the use of his name on all future versions. i have no doubt he was told about the future plans for the range.

sad but true, he loved it. but then he was a very nice man so i guess we can forgive him

I once rallied an old mini. My mate was the driver and I the navigator. We were quite successful, and won a couple of events, but my heart was not really in it and I was quite glad to hand over the navigation to someone else.

Having worked at Longbridge (IT support, not production) i can understand why it is now the country's biggest piece of flat brownfield development site.

Great for enthusiasts, terrible compared to almost every other manufacturer in the world.

Our current car is a BMW Mini, the one before that was a BMW 3 Series, before that a Rover 45. The Rover was like driving a collander.

Oh, I'm in love!

sadly "rusty" (that was his name) never made it back on the road. he really was a basket case. he had four layers of floor pan and all were rusty

still, lovely car and it sat on my drive for a year and i loved having it

New mini = driver suffers from a lack of taste. They think they're buying something 'cool' which is the worst thing whereas it's really a massive compromise of classic styling and modern engineering, just like the modern Beetle. The two are very hard to get right.

My first car was a Fiat 126, I wanted a 500 but only had £100 to spend! Loved that car, 2 cylinders and 704cc's of no power, but it was rear wheel drive and fun in the wet, until the Italian elecs stopped working! I must say I do like the new 500's, especially the Abarth version! (I'm probably going to get slaughtered for saying that!)
