Hi
I thought I'd try a mirror for commuting to work. Halfords had a choice of three - one which mounted on the frame, one on the bars and one at the end of the bars. I chose the end of bar one.

It's pointless - it vibrates so much even on smooth cycle path that it just might as well not be there. Unfortunately I had to shave off some of the plastic firrting to get it to fit to try it, so I can't even take it back.

That aside, any recommendations for mirrors? I wear a helmet and regular prescription glasses, if that makes any difference...

Thanks

I have a seebakoscope fitted to my hemet, cannot remember make, etc. but next time I am in my LBS I will check. Most of my riding is on major cross country highways in the area; think of it like cycling on the hard shoulder of a motorway! I use it as a secondary device before employing the lifesaver glance as the traffic can be very fast and the motorbikes erratic.
In Thailand I can only get what is in stock or else pay shipping, duty and VAT at this end. I have also used with succes http://www.wiggle.co.uk/zefal-z-eye-mirror/
The only thing I can say about helmet mirrors is to use the velcro fastener and also cables ties.
My latest bikes have bar end levers but a previous bike was fitted with http://www.wiggle.co.uk/cateye-bm-300g-race-mirror/ Very good and not prone to vibration

I tend not to bother on an upright, but on the recumbent - where I can't look around so easily - I use a Bike Peddler Take-a-look mirror - available from this seller on ebay:

Although the US version *can* be used on either side, the link above is for the flipped UK version - she sells both (see 'other items'), plus a helmet mount (tho' you could make one from some plastic sheet)

do you have a drop bar or flat bar bike?
i use this on my flat bar commute bike.. it also doubles as a bar end grip, i've used this for around a year now with no problems (including being knocked off literally last week and no breakages)
http://www.topeak.com/products/Mirrors/Bar_n_Mirror not cheap but well made

last year i used this http://www.blackburndesign.com/mirrors/multi-mirror-209#.UH2I71HF3Mg , good with really good visibility (better than the topeak), but still prefer the topeak

i tried this http://www.wiggle.co.uk/zefal-z-eye-mirror/ but found it annoying, and ended up selling it at a boot fair.

so far i haven't found a mirror i like for my drop bar road bike.

Love these, got 1 and swapped it between bikes in seconds, trouble was when I forgot to swap it I really missed it so bought another so they can be left on permanently.
Fitted to the bottom of the drops, good view and very little vibration, only downside for me is they make it awkward to use the drops (which I hardly ever do)

BikeEye for me. Get the wide version. Takes a bit of getting used to - you need to have the pedal on the mirror side at the top to lift your leg out of the way so you can see behind - but once you get the knack - easy. No vibration and it's always where you mounted it - not swinging about on the end of the bars.

Thanks for all the advice. The Halford's mirror broke today, so I'll probably take it back and change it for a BikeEye.
I commute on a MTB (off-road, lucky me ). The mirror is just for the sections where I'm on the road or on the cycle path.
