I'm to be off work for anything up to 10 weeks!

I'm actually missing work now, but more than that I'm missing cycling and especially my daily commute.

I went out for a walk earlier to the shops, I nearly cried when I saw the evening commuters going past on their bikes in their dayglo.

Enjoy your rides.

So why are you off for up to ten weeks then garilla?

Nothing serious I hope.

I had a emergency vitrectomy on the right eye as part of a procedure to reattach a detatched retina (I wont go into how it got detached in the first place!)

The operation involves them removing the jelly from th eye a replacing it with water and gas buubble. You then have to lie in a certain position for a while - 12 days in my case - while the bubble holds the retina in place.

However, once the 'posturing' is complete, because the retina has reattached to the macular, the bubble can then take anything between 8 and 12 weeks to disappear. In that eye the vision is very blurred and basically it appears like having a spirit level for eye!

Until this bubble has gone and I have had an assessment on the vision, I've been advised not ride. Which I totally agree with. Walking is a pain as it is, and trying to look over the right shoulder when crossing the road is 160 degree turn, so this rules out cycling.

Well you will be back, something to look forward to.

During my illness in and subsequent treatment in 1995-1996 I was off my bike for 9 months and at the time I wasn't even sure I was going to make it back.

Good luck.

Sorry to hear that Garrilla. Have you thought about getting a turbo or rollers? I know it's not cycling but at least you can keep your legs turning over.

That sounds like a good idea to keep some miles in your legs, someone on here might lend you some they're not using if you ask about.

Sounds a bit awkward does your op and recovery, hope it's quick from here on.

All the best for a speedy recovery. I can empathise a bit - I'm still waiting to get back on the bike after my knock-off in January. I've been out to the bike shed once in three weeks just for a look at them. Hoping another couple of weeks might do it. At least the weather's still rubbish at the moment!

Ouch.

My colleague had similar - lying face down for about 2 weeks, and only being able to get up for a short time - sounded horrendous. My FIL was similar, but didn't have to lie face down.

Both fine now though !!! So chin up !

Speak to the doc about a turbo - I feel the increased blood pressure from exercising may not be too good for a healing retina.

Take care and rest easy. Sight is very precious !

You're right Fossy, the doc's were'nt too happy when I proposed a daily stint on the x-bike down the gym - too much pressure build -up aint good for the eyes.

The big problem I'm having at the moment is trying to cut down on the food intake as I'm still eating for 150 miles a week so I'm already seeing, if you'll excuse the pun, a few extra bits.

You'll just have to drink lots of water - you'll be up pee-ing every 5 mins, but tummy full, and exercise to boot....

Blooming shame you weren't able to get the reg no despite your 'indiscretion'....

I had a close call a month or two back...but did not 'contact' the car (other than a rather large 'shout' back ahem .......makes you think).. and another run in on my 'estate'......hmmmmm and threatened with 'shut up or I'll break yer bones'........ both on the commute.........

Had sh!t like this before - 9.00am on a Sunday morning out for a quiet run - I was on my best bike and in road shoes (i.e. not a chance of even running) - I did nothing as the best bike is irreplaceable (literally) and was worth more than the chav's car.

One vs 3/4 ain't gonna be good.

Rest easy fella.........

Made me feel better, I'm not the only one wallowing in self pity!
