Paula Radcliffe, at her peak, commanded a similar appearance fee.

Steve Cram charges £5,000 to present awards at ceremonies.

I'm prepared to bet that Jonathan Edwards doesn't do his 'motivational speeches' for free.

They can all STFU.

Farah has only recently stepped up his distance. If he stays injury free he's got a good chance of winning the thing.
He'll have a job as he's only running to halfway - have you missed the point?
I wonder if we'll see Usain Bolt running just the first 50 metres in the next Golden League Meet so people can be happy to see him.

I myself am going to do the first half of the 100 mile sportive I've just entered. And then the second half.

It's more like asking Usain Bolt to start racing the 800/1500 metres while still doing his training for 100m. Or asking someone who does a 6 mile commute to jump straight into a 100 mile sportive have done next to no training for it.

What's Bolt's hourly rate at that price?

He is a professional sportsman.
He gets paid to turn up and do 'sporty things''.
Someone offers him a barrow load of readies to do just that.
Why would he refuse ?

It may be pointless, but lots of things are pointless. He might just carry on and do the whole distance, this could all be part of a 'cunning plan'.

Nobody is asking Farah to do a race he hasn't trained for. I, and most interested observers, would expect him to train for the distance before entering a race and then complete it. Doing half of a race merely diminishes the event by turning it into a self-publicising sideshow. There are any amount of halfs he could do elsewhere for training purposes. As I said before though, doing a half-marathon is no training for a full one.

What has? Cyclists riding half a race and getting £0.5m?

Well there is an allowance for inflation but yes.

I forgot to add 'next year' to the end of my post.

I have two points. One is that there's no way he'd have been able to prepare in time for a marathon after his Olympic concentrations. The second is that sportsfolk get paid money all the time to appear at events so this is nothing new.

He's also said that he doesn't want to detract from the genuinely competitive athletes who are racing. It's a shame that the media have latched onto the money angle and done just that.

Well he's only doing it for the money then, which is why the media is concentrating on it.

That was always going to happen if such a high profile athlete decides to only run half the race.

Nothing against Mo, if someone offered me 500000 to run half a marathon I'd bite their hand off.

I don't have a problem with Mo making money off the back of all his years of effort anyway. It's just silly of the London Marathon to pay him for half a marathon, especially if you believe it undermines the event, but then they're a big money making machine anyway.

Some slight similarities come to mind with Wiggins on the Tour of Britain, where people were unhappy because they turned up to see him and he wasn't actually trying - both off the back of a very popular Olympics. I don't recall money being the motivator there though I guess.

So he shouldn't do his job for money? I see.

That's a fair point. I think the money issue is being blown out of all proportion though.

It especially p!sses me off when it comes from Radcliffe, who used to run when injured. For money.

He's got a limited window to make money. If he can train for the event he plans to compete in at Rio 2016 and get paid to do so, why not?
