My bro has a flat in Spain and we are looking at installing ADSL. For the ltd time we are there the cost for a fixed line service is high. In the UK i have a PAYG broadband dongle which is very good value and no commitment. Anyone got any ideas on what I can get in Spain of a similar type? The flat has adequate mobile coverage (not certain about 3G but I think it is ok)

What company is your pay as you go dongle with? If the same company operates in Spain you might be able to get a spanish pay as you go sim for your current dongle so you don't get stung for roaming charges. You'd need to check for compatibility and make sure you can get to the SIM in your pay as you go dongle.

If your brother has a mobile with 3g you could use that as a modem connected to your computer via USB depending on the cost of the data tariffs .

Visiting my in-laws in Greece we used to buy dial up connection "phone cards" from street kiosks in small denominations. They might do them in Spain too. It was easy to set up on our laptop. The connection would be slow as hell being dial up but we managed for three weeks on five euros worth.

Other than that look for an unsecure wireless nearby, or find a weak key on the WPA see if you can crack it with your computer before you leave ;).

Vodafone spain do a pay as you go dongle for the internet. You can pick one up in a store. You will need to take your passport or Residency documents when you get one. Though in practice mobile broadband is more expensive in spain than it is in the UK. I think youre generally limited to a gig a month as well .

Ive not seen the dial up connections that you can purchase

Some urbanisations do provide a wireless service. And there are wider wireless services down in the more toursity areas of the costa del sol.

As for nicking a wireless, yes it is possible, but you need to be lucky. if you are clever and know what software to use, then most telefonica wireless boxs are just set up with standard 128bit WEP and are easy to break

My conscience will just about allow me to piggyback someone's stupidly open connection - which didn't succeed, when I had to try it in desperation - but breaking into a coded connection is right the other side of the line, for me at least. It's criminal everywhere and some jurisdictions take an alarmingly serious view of it. I would be unable to kid myself that that was anything other than dishonest.
