time as come in my life when i can not avoid a smart phone anymore, havent got a clue where to start and i wasnt impressed with the young salemans in the shop. Carnt see me making many calls or texts but would like to use the internet away from the house and make use of the many cycle apps.
Is the iphone the place to start and how many giga bytes should i be looking at?

iPhones, android, windows all have their advocates and those who would not touch them with a barge pole

It need not even be expensive... not the best performer, but you can pick up a Huawei Y3 for as little as £30 and then just pay for usage we have one in the car as a backup and it is quite respectable

Apart from that talk to friends, neighbours and family, see what they are using and see how they look and feel for you

For instance is a large phone better for your hands and fingers than a small one, can you each all of the screen icons

... and of course they will have made all the mistakes you are going to make and can help with setup and problems

Then the even bigger nightmare of a contract or PAYG and with which ISP

It can be cheaper to buy a phone independently and then s SIM only deal... I saved £200 over the contract period by doing this

I get unlimited data, 30 Gb of which can be used with a tablet or computer for the same price as I get 1Gb of data on another provider with similar calls

.... and of course travel, I am on 3 so when I was in Norway recently there is no additional charge, yet others will charge you for calls an data which can be expensive

Like you so use a fraction of my calls and texts,

USwitch or similar can guide you on these

Memory is not the issue it used to be, some. Android phones can have additional memory added with micro SD cards, and even Apple have the ability to add memory

I started off saying I only needed a basic smartphone, just for the odd photo, the odd text, the odd internet access away from home. I bought a cheap Samsung from Tesco. It was awful. The more I tried to use it the more I became aware of how much easier to use was my wife's iPhone 5. When the battery died in Oct last year I lost no time in going out and getting an iPhone 7, newly released at the time. I love it, it's been a brilliant experience, I wasted 2 years trying to get by with the cheap and nasty Samsung.

I've got a Samsung Note 4 for sale in the CC sale section HERE, then you could get a SIM deal as Cunobelin suggests above :okay:

It's more phone than you'll ever need but will therefore cover all bases for you as well ;)

FWIW I fell out with Apple years ago, and as your a self confessed 'IT numpty' you won't appreciate iTunes I can assure you of that

IMO everything is just easier to do on an Android phone, others disagree, but iTunes is just a horrible horrible place.

Having borrowed a friend's backup Huawei while my phone was out, I'd avoid them like the plague. Just crap. Don't quite understand the 'can't afford a smartphone'. Most of the cost of a phone for most people is running costs. And if you 'would like to use the internet away from the house', I can't see how a dumb phone is an option. If I were you I'd consider something like a HTC Sensation off eBay, then choose your service provider and package carefully, depending on your usage. (I am on 3's 3-2-1 deal, which costs me maybe £3 a month, because I make few calls, hardly any texts, and use Telegram for most of my messaging.)

How much are you wanting to spend? Galaxy J5 about £130 quid new and a giff gaff SIM for 12 quid a month for data, texts and calls?

I asked my kids.

Bless 'em, they found a good deal, which did exactly what I wanted, as cheaply as I wanted. And I still don't know, or need to know, any more than it works. And it's in a black case.

I've still got a Nokia 1100
You iz a druggie

According to all the Police Reality programmes all the drug dealers use these as they cannot be tracked like modern smart phones

., and TV is always right

I got an iPhone From work
I liked it so bought an iPhone 5 for myself

My wife was using a Doro

Within a month she took an interest in the iPhone and wanted one

They are good, but as before they do not suit everyone

I know it is bad manners to cross post, and I don't know if you like pink.....

If you have an Android device already (like a tablet?), then it makes sense to get an Android phone to tie everything together across the two devices. If you have an Apple product, then the same applies.
If you currently have neither then, having used both, Android is definitely the more user friendly operating system.

I've got a Moto G4 Plus and it's so easy to use - in fact it's my second Moto - they're reasonably priced and just work out of the box.
