I started off saying I only needed a basic smartphone, just for the odd photo, the odd text, the odd internet access away from home. I bought a cheap Samsung from Tesco. It was awful. The more I tried to use it the more I became aware of how much easier to use was my wife's iPhone 5. When the battery died in Oct last year I lost no time in going out and getting an iPhone 7, newly released at the time. I love it, it's been a brilliant experience, I wasted 2 years trying to get by with the cheap and nasty Samsung.
My bold. There's your problem. Buy a pricey Samsung and it will beat your iPhone hands down.

Back to the OP. MrsPete was having the same dilemma.
It's not so much an Android/iPhone thing than the phone itself.
She got a 'Touch Screen' phone and couldn't get on with and looked for phone with buttons to press instead.

I've got a Moto G4 Plus and it's so easy to use
I got a Moto too, the G4, it's a great phone: easy to type in, links to my apps I use on the laptop, hooks up no problems to any wifi.
You only need to watch the mobile data, it's not intuitive how to switch it on/off.
I asked a younger colleague to show me.

I got an iPhone From work
I liked it so bought an iPhone 5 for myself

My wife was using a Doro

Within a month she took an interest in the iPhone and wanted one

They are good, but as before they do not suit everyone
Similar here. Work gave us iPhones , then daughter wanted one for her birthday. Then wifey wanted one.

I stuck with my blackberry till Saturday when 6s landed at a silly price

Virgin have a good SIM only deal at. Moment . £12 for 2500 minutes unlimited text and 6Gb data on 4G I think it's£15 if not have 1 other virgin service.

iPhone SE which is the size of a 5 with the internals of a 6 but a snip at £400 for a 64 Gb ( Argos).

I tunes doesn't need to be used as you can drag n drop music and vids .

My first proper smart phone*** , which I only bought last year, is a Samsung Galaxy S5. Even then, the S7 was available, but the S5 had advantages over it, so I bought it. It's been really good.

*** I had a Nokia N95 several years ago, which at the time, was considered a smart phone, but what a heavy, un-user friendly piece of rubbish that turned out to be. I decided to get rid of it by ceremonially dunking it in the Yarra River:
