What he said.

Take everything out (put sim in another phone if you need to use it) DO NOT "just power it on to see if it works".

If you have any of those silica gel things you get in the packaging with electronic gadgets put them next to the phone.

Does the leaving it in uncooked rice story I occasionally hear on the internet actually work? A la Silica suggestion above ^^^
yep...rice draws moisture away. It's also good for putting in salt cellars when weather is humid/muggy - put a half teaspoon of rice in and it draws away any moisture.

Killed my phone by having it in my pocket when I rode my bike into the Aylesbury Arm of the Grand Union Canal after trying to avoid a hawthorn branch when exiting a bridge hole a bit fast

Felt a right tit still sat on my bike up to my waist in the canal.

Take the battery and SIM out! The water may harm the lcd display, but the electronic components and pcb will be just fine. We wash all our boards in water to get rid of the solder flux residues. It's fairly standard for boards that have to look nice. As for drying it, rice helps, but if you put it in a tray of rice inside a fan oven with the dial at 45C, things speed up. Twelve hours should do it. You may need a new battery.
Well, at least you tried! Good luck.

BTW, don't forget to take it out of the oven. My mp3 player was subsequently roasted with a chicken.
I've taken battery out. Stuck all in a bowl of rice and stuck in kitchen window which catches the morning sun. Everything looks nice and shiny.
If all else fails, bung it in a BalckBerry curry
