Well. Your idea's stupid.

You mean you don't like it. Perhaps you think road deaths (of other people at least) are a reasonable trade off for the convenience of driving. Don't feel bad, lots of people think that way, though few of them admit it to themselves.

If you can prove that forcing the driver to accept the same risk they impose on other road users wouldn't reduce road deaths I'll accept it's a stupid idea. Otherwise I'm afraid you are arguing from emotion not logic.

If a car you are in control of kills someone, you should be executed. Whether or not it's your fault. Until drivers face exactly the same risk they impose on others they will put their own convenience above others' lives.

Why just drivers? As cyclists we pose a threat (admittedly, a very small one)...and heck, I could kill someone just walking to UNI. I could walk out in front of someone, maybe a [motor]cycle and they could crash and die. I could slip over on this ice, and then slide down the road and knock an old lady over and kill her. Should I get the death penalty?

If I'm driving a car and someone jumps off a bridge and hits my car, and because of hitting my car (rather than the ground) they die, should I be executed...because I was in control of that car and I killed them.

By all means, harder punishments for motoring related deaths and injuries...but from an ethical stand point not the death penalty. I certainly agree that more needs to be done.

It's an interesting question. Do you think if you could it would make you behave any differently when walking to UNI or on ice?

(And thank you for giving the idea some real thought.)
