On a real whirlybird provided the rotor is free to spin the craft can still gyro down to the ground, theoretically slowly enough not to splat everyone aboard. I'm presuming there little model be are programmed to descend safely when the controls are released as I doubt they'd have the mass to make the rotors auto rotate as it descends.

No, they come down quick. Plenty of parts available. Rotors are the main issues.

And the balance, depending what it's made of. Don't try to fly the small ones outside, they can't cope with the slightest breeze.

I've always been worried it's could be an expensive beginners crash.

At our old flying club it was known as cheque book flying. My boy is flying one of these at the moment......
