I was in a bike shop today I don't normally use but needed a BB shell faced. While there I was watching a middle aged guy getting setup on his first road bike with all the trimmings. Bike seemed a decent choice, Spesh Roubaix, and the pile of bits was mounting up, bottle cages, bottle, pump, lid, tubes, lubes, etc, etc. So then the bike went on the stand for a more junior member of staff to fit all the extras on for him. He starts making polite conversation with the classic opening gambit of, 'are you busy at the moment'. The young guy replies that they were getting busier as people got kitted out for the new season. To which the buyer replied, ah, replacing worn out parts and upgrading components. No, said the callow youth, it's new bike time or at least a new frame. What? says old codger, clearly confused, a new bike/frame each year? I thought the idea was to get a good frame and that was you for life. Oh no, says the young gun, you want to buy the best frame you can afford and then replace it every year..........
