I liked The Fall, but agree with you about the tropes. It's clearly been very influenced by scandi noir.

And I was going to make the sane point in reply to GG about knowing the killer but you beat me to it.
So The Fall is a nornirelan version of Celti-noir? The wonderful Hinterland being my fave of that genre even if it does appear to show Ceredigion as the murder capital of the western world.

Btw, talking of tiny pools of actors, the husband of the bishop was in the last series of The Fall as a criminal psychologist.
The actor playing the husband of the bishop, Göran Ragnerstam, has been in almost everything!

EDIT: utter bollox it isn't Ragnerstam at all but Krister Henriksson.

Possibly. I didn't watch Hinterland so can't really comment on that. I think I've had my fill of dark crime thrillers. My wife is really into them and tbh I only watched Modus because she was keen (same goes for The Fall, come to think of it). She loved Hinterland too.

I should probably try and watch things that are more cheerful tbh.

Are you sure that's him? I thought it was the guy who played Wallander?

The actor is called Krister Henriksson and did indeed play Wallander as well (according to IMDb - Wallander is another that passed me by).

I deeply disliked The Fall for what I saw as its misogyny. It was nasty woman-murder porn.

Yeah, that aspect of it was a bit troubling. It seemed to be trying to use the violence against women to make some complex feminist points but ultimately didn't really succeed because the violence was just so nasty. It was a well constructed drama despite that though.

Slightly concerned that Modus already appears to be heading in a similar direction.

Wallander is the best, in my opinion. But avoid the English version with Kenneth Branagh, they were awful mainly for his overacting the Nordic broodingness .

The Fall was everything you say, but I thought it was also stretched incredibly thin over three series. I tuned in at the end of the second series expecting the satisfaction of seeing him die! And Gillian Anderson was dreadful (see comment above about Branagh).
I will not hear a word agin Kenny Branagh. I saw him at RADA (I didn't get in and he did, life might have turned out different for both of us eh?). The man can act. And his broodingness is pure celtic.

And the 90's TV film series of Wallander are sometimes awful. ;)
I must say, I didn't get Branagh as Wallander either, but it was the whole BBC thing with artful photography that made it seem a bit too overblown.
Probs best to steer clear of Hinterland than. ;)

I believe the original book upon which Modus is based is by Anne Holt?

Correct. Crime writer and previous Minister of Justice and the Police in the Norwegian Labour Government.

Another very good police series, that I believe hasn't been shown on TV in Britain, is the Danish Rejseholdet - Unit One. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rejseholdet

Very well worth watching if you get the chance.

I find I prefer the clearly enunciated sounds of Swedish TV these days over the mumblecore of Danish telly. ;)
