I find I prefer the clearly enunciated sounds of Swedish TV these days over the mumblecore of Danish telly. ;)

I've lived in Scandinavia for nigh on 28 years (14 in Stockholm and 13 in Norway) and studied Scandinavian languages at university, but I never developed 'an ear' for Danish, despite it being the parent language for the Norwegian Bokmål.

It is not an easy sound to follow or enjoy.

Swedish is a lot easier to pick up, and speak out loud, as a forenz. I don't think my palate even has the right musculature to deal with Danish. The 'mouth feel' of each is as different as the feel of English to Welsh.

What took you there in the first place?

Boringly enough, the incredible beauty of Norway (1985). Then I stayed cos I thought I had a chance with my best mate's sister: not to be. Then I met a Stockholm lady, then we un-met. And a job took me back to Norway where I still am.

That's it in a nutshell.
All the long term British ex pats I worked with had similar 'fell in love with the country/culture then fell in love with a local, have you met my sambo/särbo?' stories to tell
