Up at roughly BST time as a poke in the eye to the GMT doomsterists. Sun's up at the expected time, not amazingly.

Probably ride to cake, lunchtime pasty before a talk by a local historian about the rebuilding of the Royal Clarence Hotel (which is taking place at long last, after the catastrophic fire nine long years ago), then site meeting with local councillor about my brainwave about a mini-roundabout improvement to prioritise pedestrians and cyclists.

Morning

Bright start. Helluva windy last night but it has abated.
Needs to abate some more for me 2 pedal in it innit.
Girls back to school - phew! We survived boredom rants and frustration.

Coffee and lots of it.

That's sad that the reason for the rebuild is now in scope for historians rather than journalists.

A glorious blue sky winter's morning. Might get out for a shuffle.

Oooh senator Brian.

I've gone over that mini roundabout at least twice a day for 33 years (so more than 24k times), and it's always been a mess, with no scope for separating the various modes crossing it from five different directions, but as usual the most dangerous mode assuming priority. That needs to be turned on its head by reimagining it as essentially an area where cars & lorries intrude onto a pedestrian area with no road markings - like the Dutch 'chaotic junctions', where you have to drive like you're in a playground with children running about randomly.

It's been a saga of financial shenanigans (original owner taking the insurance money then disappearing) and broken promises. The business doing it up (Nooko) is a good 'un. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1drpp50kwpo

The historians got involved right from the start, as the fire exposed lots of hidden medieval material, and prompted a fascinating book, which I've got. It's Todd Gray doing the talk.

Poynton has this - "shared space". Mixed reception, I like it personally, like most infrastructure in the UK is now desperately in need of repair.

Problem is the sheer volume of traffic IMO.

Short muddy walk this morning to make use of the extra daylight. Tip run in a bit and "maybe" a return to running club this evening.

Maybe.

It was almost getting light when I got up and managed not to disturb the hound alarms on the way out. Mind you, woke up even earlier as I seem to have developed a cold overnight and woke up having been breathing through my mouth for a few hours. May need to kill it with gin this evening. Only moderate amounts of stupidity to deal with today, so more time for a spot of mitigation.
