Probably just as well., as you really would have been disappointed ... it is at the O2 Arena

LOL, I knew what I meant. And so did my wife.

I saw it last night, enjoyable enough for a few hours entertainment but certainly of its era

If you don't like Monty Python, then don't see it. Let them have their swansong, every one there seemed to be enjoying it. I rather watch them than the Rolling Stones or Paul McCartney creaking around and attempting to sing

I agree with you.

Where is the new stuff?

I'd love to see something new, innovative, groundbreaking and funny. That would be ace.

About two hundred thousand folk are going to go and the these shows, even more will see a live viewing at cinemas on telly later on in the week, and no doubt it will sell on DVD.

It would appear MP and the like are having another moment.

We are at an odd stage with comedy. There is nothing too new coming along as far as format or style (like satire or spitting image came along). All we really have had is a move to allow more rude words or grossness than ever before (not saying that is bad).

Stand up stand outs for me are Michael McIntyre and Russell Kane and general stand out as good Jack Whitehall. All perhaps been around a few years but all at the top of their game now.
I am quite happy for artists to be around when new or when they are good. Jack Dee has been around being the same for many years but I would see him and I recently saw Frank Skinner. Skinner is certainly past his peak and slightly moving in to the reject zone.

There is a huge pile of stuff that gets some sort of "cult" following and people just lap it up for ever more. Dr Who is top of that pile for me closely followed by James Bond. Python were brilliant in their day and I think they should be credited for expanding a sketch show format comedy into something that could sustain and be brilliant in a full length film. The whole Python thing is not comedy it is nostalgia.

For anyone who wants to watch the show, but didnt get tickets, their final O2 show will be broadcast live on GOLD at 7.30pm on 20th July. I will set the recorder and watch it at my leisure.

Cheery as always eh? They're not just re-doing the old stuff though. They've rewritten some stuff, removed some material that would be offensive now, and indulged in a silly nostalgia fest, good on them. Great to hear that, as in the old days, Terry Gilliam is the most original and funniest one by far. http://www.theguardian.com/stage/2014/jul/02/monty-python-live-mostly-anarchic-wit
In terms of actual acting, in my professional as well as personal opinion, Terry Gilliam is also the best actor of the lot. Never seen anyone so committed to the uttermost ends of performance, although only ever in short bursts.

Terry Gilliam is a genius on so many levels. I particularly enjoy his films which are sometimes mind boggling. I would put John Cleese up there as a very talented actor too.

A big thanks to @Gravity Aided for that clip. I don't remember it at all, despite being a huge fan, it has lifted my mood the whole day!

I think John Cleese is a talented comedy actor - I can't see him handling drama convincingly. Brilliant in Fawlty Towers of course. Michael Palin is (I feel) a talented comedy actor and a not bad straight actor (also a lovely bloke).

John Cleese hasn't been funny for about 2 decades. He takes himself way too seriously these days. I blame the psychotherapy.
Funnily enough (ho ho) so does he...tho' not for quite the reason you suggest. I remember him saying once that when they were doing Fawlty Towers, he used to spend the last half hour before any filming with his entire back clenched rigid, to get his whole body 'in character' for the manic, neurotic intensity of Basil. But since having therapy, he just couldn't do it anymore...he'd lost the seam of repressed fury he'd once been able to tap into.

Having said which, I have to say I tend to agree with you: he's no longer funny because he takes himself way too seriously - and also, I suspect, because his series of disastrous marriages has rather put a dent in his sense of fun.

Started to watch the 'live' version of the Monty Python last show but gave up within 30 minutes... the best bits were the old clips [The Olympics extracts particularly].

I would've been very unhappy sitting in the O2 watching it on that big screen.

It was rather sad - John Cleese having problems with lines (some of this may have been scripted but not all of it) and poor timing generally, Terry Jones looking rather out of it and Eric Idle ok but going through the motions a bit. Only Michael Palin seemed to be both making an effort and to still have all his comic abilities.
