I've been used to being the only ga..err..I mean the only cyclist at work, but then at new year a Trax object turned up. Slightly bizarre since we sell BSOs and a staff discount could have been had, with some advice about sizing and knees not touch chins..£20 more with the 25% discount could have got a usable hardtail with at least a better headset and no squeaky pretend rear suspension...but well, hinges and springs sell BSOs

Suddenly this week, although there has been no change in staff, there were four bikes. Another BSO and a half decent Carerra. Great, thinks I, always good to see more cyclists on the road.

Sadly that's where it went wrong. That night as I left, I turned out onto the road and headed off, seeing the group of 3 bikes heading along the same way chatting away in a group taking up the whole pavement.

3 more reasons for people to grumble about cyclists then :-(

Trax bikes can be OK. So cheap a quick swap out of the BB and stuff means you get a usable bike without any of the eye catchyness to tealeaves

Not squeaky pretend rear suspension ones with the seat rammed to the bottom though....

I'm no bike snob, did most of my younger cycling on old bitsa ten speeds from the auction house and a memorable (for the right reasons) tour on a Raleigh Mustang. But some BSOs are nothing more than that, with parts made of Happy Shopper mild cheddar

Oh right.. one of them!

Yeah they are awful bikes. My mate rides one. He got it for about £30 from a supermarket for good reason. I think he put £30 extra into it to get the brakes working!

I'm not sure why more people just go used if they want a decent cheap(er) bike. Why does it have to be new? I'm sure you could find something much better used for the same kind of price. I suppose they just walk in Halfords or Argos or wherever and go from there.

Complete lack of awareness of the second hand bicycle world and its the easy route for the unbikeworldly, no trawling gumtree etc, calling people sorting out convenient times, tootling off & feeling half obliged to buy just for being there even if it isn't half what you hoped for but still twice what you'd get new in Argos.
