Though TBH it is more my wife who has the sense, but since all our accounts are joint, I can't buy anything big without it being questioned.
This is one of the many reasons why the GLW and I are still married. I trust her implicitly with our accounts and little escapes her eagle eye - ! ^_^
Polar opposite to my first wife who had the simple philosophy of I earned it, she spent it. If she wanted something 'extra', she would get a part time job until she had the readies for whatever it was, then mysteriously get made redundant. :dry:

I'm unsure if these 'continuation' cars are (or can be) registered for road use. The RS200 is available as a (very accurate) replica from a couple of kit car manufacturers for a lot less money than the 'continuation' vehicles. Likewise there are a couple od Lancis Stratos replicas which are pretty-much nut and bolt perfect. Some folk think kit cars are bargain basement and poor vehicles - in fact some (particularly Cobra replicas) have suspension and braking systems far superior to the originals. The introduction of SVA/IVA testing many years ago led to very high standards within the kit car industry. My second hobby (after bikes of course) is kit cars.

I suspect the continuations can be road legal if they are made to pass IVA - this would bypass the need for type approval, but may necessitate changes which 'purists' wouldn't feel comfortable with eg. interior trim which has more 'blunt edges' than the original, or a modern engine with less emissions. Surprisingly there are some areas of IVA (such as exhaust pipe end radius) which seem more stringent than type approval - do they expect a pedestrian to be run over at speed by a reversing vehicle? There are others which are much easier to achieve eg No requirement for airbags, daytime running lights.

Had a yellow banana yellow Mexico as a 18 year old which I never really appreciated...imagine being able to afford a car and insure it yourself on an apprentices wages nowadays 🙄

Other than not being commissioned by a fascist dictator to a design more or less copied from Tatra.

2CV's are a very clever design and bang on brief.

The Beetle, on then other hand, was badly flawed in many ways and has so many negative connotations I'm surprised that anyone gets excited by them.

I heard somewhere that they got the money to develop the "people's car" by taking deposits up front akin to the modern Kickstarter scheme. However Hitler spent all the money on tanks and Meschersmitts so they never the promised cars, other than by paying again after the war. Can't vouch for the story but it is plausible

What kit car would you recommend?

My apologies for the delay, as I've been away on holiday. How long is a piece of string...... There are so many different kit cars, it depends (almost) entirely on what you want from it. Much like buying a bike .... Oh, and your bank balance and engineering skills. There have also been many more (now not available to buy new) kit cars over the years. Some examples 1) The Burton, available from the 2cv shop UK, which is a 'traditional sports roadster' which uses Citroen 2cv parts, it's well-established, low-powered but appears to be good fun, open air motoring. Getting 'more powerful' there are many Lotus 7 style kit cars which use Mazda MX5 parts and are more than fast enough for anyone (especially us cyclists :laugh:. For 'the sky's the limit' performance there is the Ultima, which will clean out the bank account, but has performance similar to a Ferrari, at a fraction of the price. I have a Quantum saloon (Ford parts) which is unusual in being a 4-seat coupe kit car, and a GRP monocoque. The most recent Quantum kit is a 60's style open-top which uses MX5 parts and the quality is superb, along with an affordable price.
If you have any specific styles/donor vehicle requirements I'm more than happy to point you to specific products (new or old). It's probably easier to advise (from an engineering point of view) some to avoid (mainly from years ago) if you consider a used purchase. It's also VERY important to ascertain any kit (however well engineered) is correctly registered, steer clear of unfinished kits off auction sites!
