Brave stuff indeed, but I think it's not uncommon for people to not realise they've been stabbed at first, especially in a fight situation. Adrenaline masks all sorts of sensation. I've heard people on telly say they thought they'd just been punched, for example.

Tries to remember the Victorian lady this happened to and fails.

It's an unnatural injury andcthe nervous system isn't properly geared to respond to it.

I hope Johnnie Scumbag gotta good poke. Serves him right for messing with a Gurkha.

I remember a story a mate of mine told me years ago about his respect for gurkhas. He had a bit of a fascination about the army, even though he was a qualified carpenter, and was also a keen rugby player.
He must have been well into his mid 20's and announced he had joined the Royal Engineers.
Anyway in about 5 years service he ended up in Norther Ireland a few times and was involved in the first Gulf War and came back with some pretty gruesome tales, but seemed to love what he was doing.
He completed his contract and got back into his former trade and has done well running his own business.
He seemed a typical soldier that has no respect for any other regiments apart from the one he served in and seemed quite prepared to fight to defend the regiments honour, except for the gurkhas.
He used to tell me about his total and utter respect for them as soldiers and as honorable people. He used to mention their skills and their loyalty and say that even though they were only litle chaps, you would be a utter fool to mess with them.
The story from the op just goes to show what he said can be true. I bet the mugger wished he had picked on someone else.
