Morning breakfast?

So with me commuting to work now, I've run into a small issue. I have I.B.S and mild Crones Disease and some mornings I just don't feel like eating "most mornings actually!".

What could I possibly shove into my stomach to give me some energy for the ride into work that is fast and easy to get down?

I really prefer not to eat, but I notice the trip home I can really haul butt since I've eaten at work "I'm a Chef" and would prefer to have the same feeling during the trip into work.

Thanks everyone!

How far is your commute?
Mine is nearly 10 miles and I don't have anything before I leave.
Bit of fruit once I get there with a cuppa.

As potsy says unless its a long or hilly ride your body should have plenty of energy stores for a typical commute provided you top them back up in the day - pasta is usually a good source. But you could try drinks instead - fruit juice, a banana based smoothie or, more expensively you could get one of the energy drinks for cycling and just take a slug before you go and top up along the way.

What is the elevation difference between home and work? Its not unusual to have commutes which are hard in easy home if work is uphill from home so it might not be just an energy thing.

16Km to work, pretty much all uphill. 13km of it is an old railway line which is mostly paved, all uphill. The grade isn't too bad "picture railway grades" and I can maintain a speed of between 25km/h to 32km/h. When I hit the 3km of road there is one area that's about a half km long and is decently steep, I can maintain a speed of around 10-15km/h on this part. Takes about 35-45 minutes to bike into work depending on how my morning goes.

The trip home, well I've eaten well at work and my speeds are considerably quicker for the obvious reason. I can bike home in about 25 minutes or less.

With my IBS/Crones it's always been the mornings that are the toughest for me. I wake up crampy, and frequent trips to the bathroom till my system wakes up. When I wake up it takes about a few hours to get it to normal. Rest of the day is cake.

I may just have to accept it for what it is I guess, and I'm fine with that. Maybe eat a bit before bed or is that a bad idea "bed at 10PM up for work at 5:30AM"

If you can do those speeds uphill over those distances there is nothing wrong with your energy or nutrition. I would just eat a normal meal high in carbohydrates (pasta is the usual staple) the evening of a ride to restock your body and just leave it as you are.

The reason you can "really haul butt" going home is mainly I think you'll find because its downhill. Even gentle grades over long distances can sap your energy - in fact gentle grades are the worst because they look flat but feel harder than flat should feel.

As most of the others say, nutrition and energy stores.... probably not the issue.
Unless it upsets your crohns, what about a nice strong double espresso?

I've never been able to stomach much for breakfast, so I find a couple of boiled eggs doused in hot sauce gives me the pep I need.

Those sorts of distances/ demands I'd not worry about eating- I tend to have half a glass of orange juice and a multi vit and that'll see me into work without issue. It forces my body to use stored energy as opposed to busy digesting what I've just eaten.

I don't get up early enough to shower and have brekky before the day starts, would rather be at home and help my wife get the kids up and off to schoo. I have breakfast with the family and get to work in time to shower & change before the working day starts.

Would porridge not be an option for the OP ?

I couldn't face eating before my morning commutes and feel awful exercising on an empty stomach so did a high calorie protein shake before . I also didn't want to lose any weight as was already bordering on a low BMI.

Good for hydration, convenient to make up and get down you. Probably stupidly overpriced but what you save on petrol etc
