Morning breakfast?

Can't do oats at all, damn things kill me! Any coffee is no-no as well, I also can't eat any fruits or veggies as insoluable fiber is NOT good for me at all.

Wife got me some energy bars but all they did is cramp me up. Maybe I'll try some Ensure or something similar.

This morning I started off like gangbusters, but half way to work hit the wall, hard. Had nothing to give and the ride was more work than fun.

The trip home though was fast and I think I could have done the round-trip again I had that much energy!

Regardless I have no intention of stopping and am excited about the future purchase of a new cyclocross!

You can't eat fruit but can you drink fruit juice?

Have you tried slowing down a bit? If you go hard you will deplete your blood sugar because your body doesn't have time to mobilise its energy stores. Go just a bit slower and it can call on other energy sources and you can go for a long time.

Fruit juice is just that, juice. With WHOLE fruit you get the insoluble fiber "skin, pulp" which is not good for IBS or Crones. Soluble fiber such as bran is another story, my system LOVES the stuff and I try to eat it 3 times a week.

I'm going to start experimenting with different foods for some sort of pre ride snack and see how it goes. When I get to work I have breakfast.

Fruit juice is full of fructose which means you get the energy giving component without all the stuff that might cause you problems. Or you could try the maltodextrins that make up the energy component of energy drinks and last a bit longer in the system.

like others, I never eat before a ride in the AM. I will only sometimes eat a banana around 4.00 but otherwise i dont especially eat anything.

20 miles each way for me at an average rolling speed of 19mph. (we cruise at around 23mph) so I put in plenty of effort but don't ever feel the need to fuel up beforehand.

What about a drink of some kind. No fiber makes it tricky, rules out shakes and juiced carrots but possibly a sport type drink.

Porridge made with soya milk. Nice and simple, easy to digest, slow release enrgy and reduces colesterol. I put in a teaspoon of honey for a treat

I'm with you on the IBS, I mainly have toast (white dry) and bananas with a fibogel to follow up - loads of soluble fibre, slow release energy from the bananas and a happy gut.
I also have a fibogel after evening meal, and find that helps with how I feel in the morning.

I can have the odd bowl of breakfast cereal, and am lucky that I can do porridge without too much grief, but many fruits and veggies are, as you say, difficult to deal with.
I seem to also get away with probiotic plain yoghurts.

I have recently been diagnosed with IBS. It is a real nuisance. I generally have to use the toilet at least 4 times in the first hour or so after getting up, and it seems that whatever I eat involved a couple of visits afterwards.

I am on Fybogel and the couple of months I have been taking it I cannot see any difference. I take mine half hour before meals (breakfast and evening) because they say take on an empty stomach. I see you take yours after eating, do you find this better?

It is beginning to get me down a bit, especially when getting taken short on rides. I have a number of routes worked out where there are toilet facilities on the way just in case, and I carry a Radar key. I often take Immodium before a ride. Not the best thing, I know, but it does seem to slow things down a bit.

I am doing two 50 milers next weekend, out on Saturday and back on Sunday. Both I will be leaving home fairly early so I will have to be up at least two hours or so before my planned leaving time. Worrying about it probably makes the condition worse, but it does take much of the pleasure out of my cycling.

Is that your Harlow to Sudbury ride? It sounds great!

I've never been able to stomach much for breakfast, so I find a couple of boiled eggs doused in hot sauce gives me the pep I need.

Same here AC, 2 scrambled eggs on brown toast with Nandos peri peri sauce and a double esspresso. I used not to have any breakfast but now cant live without it, I did find that the earlier I got up the worse it was. Also somethings were easier to stomach than others, a banana first thing I cant stomach (i do like bananas but just not early in the morn)

As Compo said Worrying about it probably makes the condition worse, I used to have problems but then I used to have a really stressful out look on life and bad food, drinking too much etc. not that i have less stress now but am just better at dealing with it and have a better diet all round.

I'm sure you have been down these avenues docs, nutritionist etc, I have been really interested in teh Food Hospital on Channel 4 recently. amazing how you can almost self medicate just by changing your diet.

.
This isn't always true by the way. Crohn's sufferers often have different triggers for their condition, some can manage it entirely with medication. My FIL can eat & drink almost anything nowadays, but give him a pear and he will be unwell for at least 48 hours. Mind you, they spent over a year working on getting his medication right so that he can do that... I hope yours gets more sorted, it is possible for some.

Hmmm, I've been having Franks Hot Sauce for a long time but have recently started having homemade habanero sauce that is peach based with cumin and coriander. I'm salivating as I type this.
